This month we are offering a FREE senior nurses clinic! Animals age more quickly than humans. Dogs and cats are generally considered geriatric at the age of 8 years. Large breed dogs tend to have a shorter life span so may be considered geriatric from the age of 6 years. Although we cannot stop our pets from getting older, we can delay the signs of ageing through good management and regular health checks. In early stages, some of your senior pet's problems may not be obvious, and the gradual onset of health problems, in an apparently healthy pet often go unnoticed. Having your pet checked regularly will allow us to detect problems early. We all think that as an animal gets older they tend to slow down a lot, however this may be due to an underlying medical problem. Problems that often occur in older animals are: • heart conditions • arthritis • kidney disease • dental problems • liver disease • thyroid disease • diabetes • mental health issues During the health we will check any lumps or bumps that may have developed as your pets has aged. Often these lumps are benign, harmless, fatty lumps but occasionally they can be something more sinister. We will examine your pet's mouth for any dental problems and check their heart for any abnormalities. A urine screen and blood test can be taken to check for illnesses that are common in geriatric animals. With early detection these conditions can often be treatable and will greatly improve your pet's quality of life. Senior pet screening package (following nurse health check) Includes: • In house Blood sample • In house urine sample analysis • Consultation with the veterinary surgeon. Normal price £113 Offer price £69.00 Even if they are no abnormalities detected at your pet's health check, the information we gather will give us a valuable base line on what is normal for your pet. This information is essential for the future if you ever have any concerns about your pet's health. Older animals have different nutritional requirements than younger ones. They require a reduction in fat and sodium and an increase in fibre in their diet. In general, older animals are less active, especially if they are neutered, this means they are more prone to obesity. Weight management is crucial to maintain a target weight to minimise the load on the joints and heart. Obesity has been shown to reduce life expectancy in pets by an average of 2 years. Our clinics will assess your pet's weight and if necessary help you take steps to reduce it. For more information or to book in simply call us or pop into branch.

There are a wide range of different wormers available, but you sometimes have to be careful what combinations of worm and flea treatment you use together - some drug mixtures can cause problems in collies, for example. So always talk to one of our vets before choosing a wormer!

Originally, lungworm was found in Southern England and Wales however there have now been confirmed cases in the Midlands, Northern England, Scotland and Ireland. The condition seems to be on the increase, which is why you should treat your dog wherever in the country you are.

Another type of intestinal worm is Roundworm. Roundworm infestations in pets don’t always cause any symptoms, but they can be associated with diarrhoea and weight loss. If you’re concerned, use a proper modern wormer regularly to kill them off!

Next we are going to take a look at some different types of parasitic worms. Most pets are at risk from tapeworms however some more so than others. If you have a pet that regularly hunts or scavenges, you should treat them to protect against these parasites more often. This is because tapeworms use intermediate hosts such mice and even fleas, to complete their life-cycle.

Another type of mite is Demodex. Demodex mites live in the hair follicles, and small numbers are harmless. However, too many of them can cause hair loss, a rash and baldness. They are diagnosed with skin scrapes, which we can look at under the microscope - note the stumpy legs and long fat tail!

Another type of mite is the Sarcoptic mite. Sarcoptic mites are eight legged parasites that are extremely contagious and cause the condition known as mange. They cause severe irritation, redness, itching and skin disease usually in dogs. These mites can be transferred to humans causing scabies. Sarcoptic mange can be prevented using regular spot-on treatment - chat to us about it!

Next on the list is the ear mite! These are smaller than fleas, but not so small that you can’t see them with the naked eye. If you look carefully among any brown discharge from your pet’s ears, you may see small moving white dots - these are ear mites! Imagine having them in your own ears! Speak to us about prevention and treatment for them.

Our first culprit is the common flea. Did you know that flea pupae can remain dormant for many years? They’re woken up by heat, movement and air currents - usually a signal that there’s a tasty dog or cat approaching! However, you can trick them into emerging early (so they can be killed!) by thoroughly vacuuming the carpets - noise, warmth and airflow do the job nicely.
