Introducing the top model in our range, a beautiful 'double top' concert class guitar from the 'Echoes' workshop of Chinese master luthier Yulong Guo. It features an Engleman spruce and nomex top, ziricote back and sides (cedar lined), flamed maple body binding and a mahogany neck with ebony fretboard. At £1495 it is the lowest priced double top classical guitar available anywhere. Here is are some photos and a link to a video performance :- https://vimeo.com/209095114
The classical guitar trade has been thrown into turmoil by the international trade ban on all species of rosewood that came into effect on January 2nd 2017. So now the export and import of all guitars that contain any type of rosewood in their construction is banned. Rosewood has long been the most popular wood for the construction of the backs and sides of classical guitars and the existing ban on rosewood species such as Brazilian, Madagascar, and Cocobolo has now been extended to encompass all species, including Indian rosewood. All of our current guitar models contain rosewood somewhere in their construction so we are only able to sell them within the UK and European Union. There are alternative woods to rosewood that are equally appealing in their beauty, such as Pau Ferro, Ziricote and Java Ebony, which are species not affected by the new regulation; but it will take some time for guitars built using these alternative tone woods to become available. So, a very difficult year ahead for our trade but I'm sure all will come good in the end.
New to our model range are our 'Modern' Estudio instruments that incorporate features especially appealing to new players, like the integral armrest for playing comfort and the bowl shaped cutaway for easier access to the upper frets. They have traditional fan bracing for the spruce or cedar tops, the back and sides are available in Indian rosewood or Java Ebony. Here's a link to a YouTube video of a cedar top model being played by good friend of Rathbone & Brown, Bryan Perez. https://youtu.be/nFshVZH2dds
