Classes are taken by head coach David Webb who is a Black belt in Brazilian Jiu Jitsu under Nicolas Gregoriades and a black belt in Judo with the British Judo Association.
As a founder member of the ‘Brazilian Jiu Jitsu in Schools’ initiative the Toukon Academy is proud to be the largest single provider of Brazilian Jiu Jitsu to school children (aged 5-9 years) across the United Kingdom.
Creating a functional environment through core movements and fundamental learning patterns is paramount to the development of everyone training with the Toukon Academy. Everything taught on our mats is applicable to the sporting arena as well as a self-defence environment.
Training at the Toukon Academy is always hard and taken seriously; however, we always maintain a professional, friendly and welcoming atmosphere. New members are important to us and are always made to feel welcome, no matter what your age, level of fitness or experience level, at the Toukon Academy there is a class that will benefit you as an individual.

"I knew I was gonna receive this..." Classic. This quote entirely sums up what I have come realise as the paradox of Adam Turner. On the one hand, incredibly quick-witted, confident and popular but behind this is a quiet, methodical, absolute mindset. Driven by self-improvement and ensuring he realises his full potential, Adam doesn't entertain the unnecessary. He has never been interested in promotions and understands the importance of 'accountable effort'. During randori I witness him trying things, I feel certain alternative subtleties; grips, entries, positions, risks. No two rolls are ever the same. His attitude is brilliant and it charges me to be inquisitive and explore my own Jiu-Jitsu too. Intentional or not, I believe this ego-less attitude has changed his game massively over the years; from MMA and wrestling to leg attacks and lapel guard and it's so important to recognise and understand the value he presents to the Tōukon Academy and my own development. In truth, I also 'knew' Adam would receive his black belt, its attainment is set aside for a certain individual. Blue belt: 16/12/2011 Purple belt: 18/12/2013 Brown belt: 28/06/2015 Black belt: 30/01/2018 I first met "the Quiz Master" in May 2010. The Tōukon Academy had opened its first satellite offering in Hitchin, Hertfordshire and I had headed over to train on a Tuesday evening with the MMA club that shared the same space on another night. When the coach matched the class for drilling, I was paired with Dave. I remember the technical portion of the class as if it were yesterday, we were drilling the Kimura from the North/South position and whilst the rest of the class seemed to struggle with the most basic of concepts associated with the control and application, Dave was extremely adept and knowledgeable. When it came to the randori section his level was way ahead of the rest of the group and in truth he knew more than the coach - it wasn't long after, Dave moved over to the Tōukon Academy full-time. Since that time, Dave has played an integral part in the support and function of the academy, becoming a profound point of reference to aspire to ever since. Thinking back to our first meeting, despite Dave's evident abilities and being an established member of the said MMA group, at no point did he exude any level of self-importance or ego towards me - the new guy - something I have always admired. I've learned so much from Dave over many years; he treats everyone with the same level of respect from novice visitors to revered Jiu-Jitsu legends. First time beginners are immediately put at ease by his patient approach and intelligent explanation, yet at the same time he can engage at a very high level against seasoned competitors. I am confident that over the next few years I will continue to learn from Dave's subconscious direction, gratefully aware that, because of our initial meeting in 2010, I have a senior grade who's impact and influence as a senior grade carries great weight across my academy. Began training: 19/11/2008 Blue belt: 20/05/2010 Purple belt: 30/05/2013 Brown belt: 28/06/2015 Black belt: 30/01/2018 Persist and Jiu-Jitsu will give you many things: martial skill, patience, self-control, confidence, logic, rational thought and a unique level of humility and integrity. For all of this and more, I am so grateful. However, for me, the most important reward from training honestly, are the friendships I have been fortunate to develop - those interpersonal relationships that motivate, invigorate and regulate. I've lost count of the people I have met on the tatami over the years, those that have visited my academy as well as those I have come into contact with at championships and seminars, but for all these people there are a handful I hold most dear. The coaches that have influenced me, believed in my abilities, training partners that have pushed me and true friends that I want to be around, on and off the mats. Alex joined the Tōukon Academy before we offered any form of Jiu-Jitsu, becoming a regular fixture of our Wednesday night Judo ne-waza sessions. Ten years later he has become an extremely competent training partner that I constantly check my progression against, however, to say he is more than this would be an understatement. I speak with Alex every day, usually it's mundane banter - the sort friends are great at, sometimes more complex issues raise their head - where friends offer support and advice. We check in with each other, enquire about each others children and he was best man at my wedding. When we spar there is always a quiet, serious, controlled aggression to it. Nothing is given and the few submissions are greeted with a genuine appreciation and respectful tone based on the knowing tenacity required for its execution. Above all of this, the one thing that I hold dear is the quality of our friendship, Jiu-Jitsu has created this and on Tuesday 30 January, under the watchful eye of @mauriciogomes.bjj I felt immense pride in tying his black belt.
