One of the implications of Jesus’ resurrection.
This excellent article compliments what we thought about in our Good Friday Service.
The story of Cleopas journeying to Emmaus, which we considered today, matters to us in at least two ways. First of all, our life’s a journey that continues beyond the grave, and out into eternity. So, what direction is our life going in - Heaven or Hell? Since Jesus is the same yesterday, today, and forever (Hebrews 13:8), He still reveals Himself to people who recognise that they have no other hope. Jesus is the long promised Messiah who came to liberate those who believe in Him from their sin, and its awful eternal consequences. So, we need to repent of our sin - which means we need to rely on God’s help to change the direction our lives are going in, and place ourselves under the lordship Jesus - because only then will we know the gifts of forgiveness, new life, the Holy Spirit living within us, and the assurance that we’re bound for Heaven. Secondly, trusting Jesus to rescue us from our sin doesn’t mean that we won’t have any problems. But, when we’re feeling devastated, anxious, or heart-broken. Or, life doesn’t turn out the way we hoped for, or expected, we have a Saviour who will always walk alongside us, and who will help us to make sense of what we’re going through. Some day the risen, reigning Jesus will return again to make all things new. Then there will be no more problems of any kind, because there will be no more sin.
Please join with us tomorrow to worship the risen Lord Jesus. Iveagh Presbytery Easter Dawn Service at 6:30am at Spelga Dam. There’s also the opportunity to go for breakfast in Clonduff Presbyterian Church Hall after the Service. All proceeds from the breakfast will go to the work of Tear Fund. Sunday School & Sofa Club at 10am in the Church Hall. Easter Worship Service at 11am when the choir and Sunday School will be taking part. We will look at Cleopas’ encounter with the resurrected Jesus on the road to Emmaus in Luke 24. Easter Praise Service in Magherally Parish Church at 7pm. Everyone will be made very welcome.
Tonight, we saw from Matthew 26:36-46, that when Jesus prayed in Gethsemane, “My Father, if it is possible, may this cup be taken from me” (v.39) the cup He was referring to contained a potent cocktail of: 1. Bearing The Sin Of His People 2. Being Forsaken by His Father 3. Enduring The Wrath of God What Jesus went through in Gethsemane has two main implications for us. Firstly, on the cross, Jesus endured all that hell is for His people. If we trust completely, and exclusively, in who Jesus is, and what Jesus has accomplished, then since : > Jesus bore our sin on the cross, we don’t need to bear its guilt. > Jesus was forsaken by the Father, we’ll never know what this is like. > Jesus bore the wrath of God, we’ll never experience it. Secondly, Jesus will walk with us in the darkest place, in the way that no-one can, because He has been to the darkest place, in the way that no-one else has. Jesus is uniquely able to give us the strength that we need in our time of trouble. “For we do not have a high priest who is unable to sympathize with our weaknesses, but one who in every respect has been tempted as we are, yet without sin. Let us then with confidence draw near to the throne of grace, that we may receive mercy and find grace to help in time of need.” (Hebrews 4:15&16) This song compliments what we were thinking about tonight.
