SYNT - Swiss Young Naturalists' Tournament
Description
The Swiss Young Naturalists Tournament is a competition for students, age 12 to 16, interested in natural sciences. Das „Swiss Young Naturalists‘ Tournament“ (SYNT) ist ein projektorientierter Teamwettbewerb für naturwissenschaftsbegeisterte MittelschülerInnen aus der ganzen Schweiz. Im Vorfeld des Wettbewerb arbeiten die 12- bis 16-jährige Gymnasiasten und Gymnasiastinnen (ältere SchülerInnen siehe unten) intensiv an einer anspruchsvollen Fragestellung und lernen, Theorie und Praxis zu kombinieren.
Ihre Lösungen präsentieren die SchülerInnen dann in sogenannten „Science-Fights“. Dabei handelt es sich um eine Art wissenschaftliche Debatte, in der die Teilnehmer zuerst ihre Arbeit vorstellen und danach mit kritischen Fragen eines gegnerischen Teams konfrontiert werden. Am Ende werden ihre Leistungen von einer fachkundigen Jury aus Wirtschaft, Lehre und Forschung benotet. Dieser Modus soll einen interaktiveren Umgang mit den Naturwissenschaften ermöglichen, als dies im herkömmlichen Unterricht der Fall ist.
Die besten 6 SchülerInnen haben die Möglichkeit, sich am "International Young Naturalists' Tournament" (IYNT) mit Gleichgesinnten aus aller Welt zu messen. (http://www.iynt.org/)

The „Swiss Young Naturalists’ Tournament“ is a team competition for students from across Switzerland interested in natural sciences. In preparation for the tournament students, age 12 to 16 (for older students see below), work on a challenging open ended problem, encouraging them to engage in scientific research.
At the tournament the students then present their solution in so called “science fights”. Thereby a student first presents his or her solution and is then confronted by challenging questions from another team. Finally a jury panel grades the two teams. This format ensures that the SYPT is a highly interactive and lively tournament.
The six best students have the opportunity to represent Switzerland at the “International Young Naturalists’ Tournament” (IYNT) and can compete with students from all over the world. (http://www.iynt.org/)

The SYNT Workshop 2018 was a success. 30 students had the chance to work on their problems for three days. Besides working on problems, the week was filled with other fun activities.
