SAINT PATRICK depicted in a stained glass window at Saint Benin's Church, Ireland ☘️Saint Patrick's Day, or the Feast of Saint Patrick is a cultural and religious celebration held on 17 March, the traditional death date of Saint Patrick (c. AD 385–461), the foremost patron saint of Ireland. Saint Patrick's Day was made an official Christian feast day in the early 17th century. The day commemorates Saint Patrick and the arrival of Christianity in Ireland, and celebrates the heritage and culture of the Irish in general. Celebrations generally involve public parades and festivals, cèilidhs, and the wearing of green attire or shamrocks. Christians also attend church services and historically the Lenten restrictions on eating and drinking alcohol were lifted for the day, which encouraged and propagated the holiday's tradition of alcohol consumption. It is believed that Saint Patrick was born in Roman Britain into a wealthy Romano-British family. Much of what is known about him comes from the Declaration, which was allegedly written by Patrick himself. According to the Declaration, at the age of sixteen, he was kidnapped by Irish raiders and taken as a slave to Gaelic Ireland. It says that he spent six years there working as a shepherd and that during this time he "found God". The Declaration says that God told Patrick to flee to the coast, where a ship would be waiting to take him home. After making his way home, Patrick went on to become a priest. According to tradition, Patrick returned to Ireland to convert the pagan Irish to Christianity. The Declaration says that he spent many years evangelising in the northern half of Ireland and converted "thousands". He used the three-leaved shamrock to explain the Holy Trinity to Irish pagans, that is why it is customary the "wearing of the green".☘️

CLAUDE MONET 'Falaise à Varengeville' (1882) as seen in TEFAF Maastricht 2017 In 1874 - with the painting 'Impression, soleil levant'-Claude Monet established the Impressionist movement of the end of the 19th century. Contrary to the previously established methods of studio painting, Monet, and the group which saw him as its intellectual leader, sought their themes out of doors and developed a brilliant style of painting in natural light. Resisting all obstacles, Monet went on to develop the method further, exploring it to the limits. He would place spots of unmixed color next to each other and would pursue a single topic through long periods of time. Born in Paris in 1840, the artist, already famous in his own lifetime, died at Giverny in 1926.

SALVADOR DALÍ 'Triumph of the Toreador' (1969) as seen in TEFAF Maastricht 2017 This is one of the 25 works from the suite of Carmen. ..'Set in Seville, Spain, circa 1830, the story of the opera, Carmen, is wonderfully Spanish in its colorful exuberance and inexorable tragedy. Dali’s 25-piece lithographic suite might be the single best of all of the Catalan painter’s graphic work – admittedly a subjective viewpoint, but one that would surely garner staunch agreement from many Dali collectors. Dali captures with refinement, drama, exquisite draftsmanship and deep emotion the salient scenes and little nuances of what has become one of the world’s most popular operas. Dalí expresses valor and triumph through the relative simplicity and symmetry of Triumph of the Toreador, but through all 25, he never lets us forget his surrealist and Spanish leanings...' PABLO PICASSO 'Homme à la pipe' (1969) as seen in TEFAF Maastricht 2017 'The character of the smoker had a long and distinguished history in Picasso's art. This figure, in addition to his obvious Freudian connotations of manhood, was essentially a reference to the artist himself. In countless photographs from this era the artist was pictured smoking a cigarette. In this painting from 1969, the pipe smoker has taken on a persona of the musketeer. The iconography of the musketeer was indicative of Picasso's self-awareness in the years before his death. As Picasso developed this series during the late 1960s and into the 70s, the musketeer became a multi-dimensional figure, exhibiting a range of personalities including card players, musicians and pipe smokers, illustrating his adventures as a bon vivant. For Picasso, the musketeer signified the golden age of painting.' From Brigitte Léal, Christine Piot and Marie-Laure Bernadac, The Ultimate Picasso, New York, 2000
