This event will focus on the topic of “Design Thinking”. Some of the world’s leading brands, such as Apple, Google, Samsung, and GE, have rapidly adopted the Design Thinking approach and Design Thinking is being taught at leading universities around the world, including Stanford, Harvard and MIT. Design thinking is an methodology that provides a solution-based approach to solving problems. It’s extremely useful in tackling complex problems that are ill-defined or unknown, by understanding the human needs involved, by re-framing the problem in human-centric ways, by creating many ideas in brainstorming sessions, and by adopting a hands-on approach in prototyping and testing. Alexander Boll will present insights into the design thinking process and application of this methodology. He obtained a degree in Business Administration from LIMAK -Austrian Business School and is currently Innovation Manager at Haufe group. This event is also in collaboration with women ++ , a Swiss non-profit organization that strives to increase diversity in tech. Following his presentations, you will have the chance to discuss more with Alexander over the networking apéro. Please register on our website: https://bsse-industry.ethz.ch If you are not affiliated with any Swiss university anymore and would like to register for this event, please e-mail us via bsse-industry@bsse.ethz.ch.

We host this event together with ETHZ's iGEM Team. Dr. Simon Ittig, CEO and co-founder of T3 Pharmaceuticals completed a PhD on microbial pathogenesis at the University of Basel. He started working on the T3 Pharma technology during his post-doctoral studies at the Biozentrum. In 2015, he and his co-workers decided to develop the technology further to bring it into clinics. T3 Pharmaceuticals is a pre-clinical biopharmaceutical company working to advance new generation therapies for cancer patients as a spin-off of University of Basel. The team has developed an efficient protein delivery technology that is based on the use of live bacteria. While the technology has diverse applications in research, T3 Pharma has further developed the system to serve as a novel therapeutic to treat solid tumors. The idea to treat cancer by the use of live bacteria has also been taken up by this year’s ETHZ iGEM team. In a short talk they will present what they have in mind to deliver a drug in a controllable and safe manner to treat tumors. The talk will be followed by an apéro where you can talk some more to Simon Ittig as well as to our ETHZ iGEM team. Make sure to book your spot via our website (or if you are not affiliated to a university anymore, to let us know via e-mail: bsse-industry@bsse.ethz.ch)

Dr. Ralf Hortsch, head of operations biofuels & derivatives at Clariant, will present his career and current work at Clariant in Munich. Ralf is working for the Sunliquid project and will therefore give you an insight into how straw and other agricultural waste material can be effectively transformed into fuel. Indeed, shortage of fossil resources, energy security, climate change, environmental protection are the issues concerning us today in the energy sector. Alternative sources of energy must be found to reduce our dependence on oil and nowhere is this more evident than in the transport sector. In the European Union, the US and other major economic areas, politicians have laid down basic frameworks to promote the use of climate-friendly biofuels. Our guest Dr. Ralf Hortsch from Clariant will talk about the sunliquid process and elucidate the great challenges and future perspectives of second generation biofuel production. He will be accompanied by Dr. Jochen Dubiel, head of corporate communiations, and Anne Maier, Manager of corporate & GTI communications at Clariant in Switzerland. They will both be at the networking apéro following Ralf’s talk to answer additional questions about Clariant.
