Em 2006, enquanto fugia de Kinshasa, RD Congo, eu estava sentado no meu lugar de primeira classe no último vôo que saiu do país enquanto o golpe de estado estava devastando a cidade, mesmo os pássaros fugiram das árvores da cidade mostrando a gravidade da situação. No avião, sentei-me (finalmente), na minha calma relativa ... peguei o livro que estava lendo durante a semana em que estávamos trancados em casa, rastejando em quatro patas de um quarto para outro evitando arriscar nossas cabeças aos obus, bombas e tiros de armas, que estavam pondo fogo em nosso edifício. O livro consistia - oh deuses - das 613 leis religiosas judaicas. Logo depois me sinto finalmente próxima de escapar daquilo que se tornou um trauma na minha vida, e beste momento entra apressada na cabine uma senhora vestida em um hijab e se instala sentada - bem no meu lado. Sinto imediatamente o desejo de esconder o livro, mas considero meu direito de seguir em busca das minhas liberdades tanto literal quanto figurativa. Esta senhora não pode se conter, mas sentir-se livre para começar a falar comigo, mesmo que eu estivesse absorvida no meu livro. A certo ponto, ela se virou para mim e disse com um sorriso sádico no rosto e uma suave calma: "logo voltaremos a conquistar a Europa ..." Naquela época, eu não percebi que, aquela mulher, poderia ter sido, muito possivelmente, uma jihadista, mãe de alguns jovens literalmente mentalmente fodidos que hoje estão se explodindo e matando em nome de Alá, pessoas inocentes. Eu nunca esquecerei aquele dia. A alegria da liberdade, e a força da ameaça, que se tornou hoje mais do que nunca, uma realidade.
