The Sutter Castle was built in the late 1400's. The Sutter family took ownership of the castle in the early 1800's and used it as a doctors practice.
The Sutter Castle was built in the late 1400's. At the time the Swiss were building castles of defense to fortify their noble citizens. The Sutter Castle was first built for Anton Löw. Anton was a wealthy and well liked man. However, Anton Löw was condemned to death when being found guilty of Adultery. Anton Löw would provide the title to the Sutter Schloss to Johann Baptist Fortunate Sutter. Johann Baptist Fortunate Sutter was a man of the cloth. Johann Baptist Fortunate Sutter's depiction is found in the many museums of Switzerland. The Sutter family entered Appenzell Innerrhoden entering from St. Gallen Switzerland at the time the land was surveyed for settlements. The Sutter family first entered Switzerland from Germany. Anton Löw would come to find the ultimate price be paid in the second smallest Kanton of Switzerland. The Kanton's flag offended the pope in the 1500's containing a depiction of a bear with a large red tongue and matching penis. It is rumored that Anton Löw was brought before trial and the punishment was excessive for the crime of adultery. As the tale is told the executioner would first cut off the arm of Anton Löw. The executioner would later look to the court to be given the order to execute Anton Löw by decapitation. Whether or not the offense of the flag played a part in the decision making while constructing the Sutter Castle is a mystery open for debate. The deed passed from Anton Löw to Johann Baptist Fortune Sutter. The Sutter family would not take control of the family castle for approximately 300 years. It was not until the early 1800's that the Sutter family had reached a level of wealth to afford the upkeep and taxes associated with occupancy of the Sutter Castle. Roman Sutter, a doctor that tended to the likes of Katherine Grand, would afford the ability to provide the Sutter family with their ability to occupy the Schloss. The castle is sometimes referred to as the Doctors House or Doktorus for this reason. In 2011 the Folra Sutter the last living relative residing in the Sutter Castle passed away quietly in her nineties. The family existing abroad in New Jersey Christian Sutter contacted council within one year of her death. Mister Sutter is the family historian and a former corporation owner. It was not long before Christian Sutter's corporation website SuisseJet.com was hacked. Christian was working his way through the simplified naturalization process, an upcoming professional of the year as sited by Internationals Who's Who, and fully invested in his corporations and naturalization proceedings to retain the legal representation for a Sutter Family Restoration allowing for occupancy of the direct family. It was Roman Sutter's intention to take ownership of the Castle so that he could give 33 percent of the castle to the Swiss Government in exchange for a dispensation allowing for family residency. The dispensation is preserved by family historian Christian Sutter of Emerson New Jersey. Christian is hopeful to complete his dream in the Sutter family legacy restoration. The Sutter family before were known as artists and well liked tavern owners. In the late 1700's John Sutter would rise to be elected Landammann as many Sutter's before. The Sutter family name "El Captain Sutter" is associated with supreme negotiators that worked to secure Helvetica and establish alliances with their neighbors. The families political prowess often provides for a number of stories including mid evil propaganda. The Sutter Family of AI is also known for their creation of the first French and Swiss alliances. It was the Star Sutter Wappen that worked with Charles Maurice de Talleyrand-Périgor Prime Minister of France to provide financial consulting during a time where France was facing financial default that earned the title El Captain Sutter. The family is also known for working closely with the bishop of constance, Katherine Grand, and many more. In the 1700's the pope would return to provide an example of how strict Appenzell Innerrhoden laws were to remain. John Sutter collected on a mortgage of a neighboring town after rising to Landammamn in the late 1700's. At the time the practice of annexation of property outside a Kantonal boundary was for the review of the courts. The opposition in the previous election by the name of Giger lost the position of Landamman. But, he would summon to pope to request the treasury in a loan extended to Obberg Switzerland. John Sutter would be placed in prison immediately. There are paintings depicting John Sutter suckling at the breast of his pregnant wife. John Sutter's wife Maria would be the only allowed to visit as the court would decide to execute John. His execution was not the only punishment ordered by the court. John would be ordered to be on exile from Switzerland for a 150 years. The legend is that it was to prevent his spirit from haunting the people of the tiny Swiss Kanton. The only one able to provide nourishment to John would be the sweetest Maria every to take on the Sutter name. Maria was pregnant with John's son while he was on trial. The trial proceeded very quickly. Upon execution the court allowed for John to provide his last words to the people that elected him Landamaman. John Sutter would elect to sing Ave Maria for the people of the town. He continued to sing the song over and over. It is said that at the end of his third time sining the song the executioner would end his concert when lowering his sword. Maria Sutter would file for an appeal annually. Ironically John Sutter was buried just outside the Sutter Castle despite his exile. For years Maria would continue to file appeal after appeal. The story would be told that 45 years later to the date of John Sutter's execution that the appeal would be accepted. It wasn't until the practice became popular among other Kanton's annexing properties outside their Kantonal boarder that a precedent was set for John's case. Maria would hold John Sutter's grandson up to the Castle window as an honorable burial was provided. John Sutter was exhumed and his head was placed from between his legs to between his shoulders. Maria's grandson would ask; "Grandmother why are they digging that man up?" Maria would reply : "For his clothing" The Sutter family and Switzerland are synonymous with one another. Roman Sutter is a name that has carried great pride for the Sutter family. Roman Sutter the play right and famous music director would grow up to love his fatherland all the same. Upon the appeal Appenzell Appenzell Innerrhoden would be given an additional vote in Appeznell's Grand Secret Council. The appeal of John Sutter was not the only benefit for the Kanton's people. Roman Sutter loved his fatherland so dearly that he wrote "Rufst du, mein Vaterland!" to express his love in music. The offering became so popular it has been used as the Swiss National anthem. The Sutter Castle is a legacy of Switzerland, a legacy of the Star Sutter Wappen family, and a legacy of the traditional Kanton of Appenzell Switzerland. To this day Appenzell keeps a very traditional Kanton to honor and remember those that would bare witness to these events. The Sutter family creed "If God Is With Us, None Are Against Us." and the humming of Ave Maria can be found in the whispers of Appezell's yodelers and alphorn players. The Kanton was the first to write mid evil folklore as entertainment. The Sutter Castle is a legacy for all mankind. It tells the story of punishment that is excessive which when retold brings tears to the eyes of us all. The Kanton is known for it's pure democracy and freedom. Those who love Appenzell would have their settlement there no other way in it's entirety. Lovers of the canton include Johann Baptist landscape artist as well as the entire Sutter Family.
