Graduate Programs Madrid
Description
Graduate programs in Saint Louis University at the Madrid campus where students can earn a Masters Degree in either English or Spanish. Masters Degree in English:
As part of an American university in Madrid, our degree program enables students to pursue English literary studies from the Middle Ages to the present within transatlantic as well as non-Anglophone-centered contexts, attending to the cross-cultural and international networks of influence that shape both cultures and their productions. Through transnational approaches to literature and rhetoric, our students explore texts and traditions from across multiple perspectives (cultural, social, and historical) and with an emphasis on points of exchange and intersection. The goals of the program are to provide participants with the tools to achieve high standards of literary scholarship, consciousness of their participation in a community of inquiry about literature in English and textuality, and appreciation of the aesthetic, cultural and ethical significance of literature in the development of individuals and society. Students achieve these competences with the added value of having viewed literature in English from both inside and outside, while immersed in another language and culture. The program also prepares students to teach writing in multicultural contexts, providing instruction in transnational, cross-cultural rhetoric and practice teaching in multinational classrooms. Students may elect to complete the Certificate in University Teaching Skills (CUTS) free of charge.
Seminars meet in the afternoons and evenings for fifteen weeks (September-December, January-May) at Saint Louis University’s Madrid Campus. Students also take two seminars during a six-week summer session at Saint Louis University’s Frost Campus, in Saint Louis, Missouri. (Note: Summer session tuition scholarships are available.)

The program immerses participants in the Spanish language and its cultures; provides tools to achieve high standards of literary scholarship, along with an appreciation of the cultural and historical events which have shaped Spain and the Americas and their artistic and literary movements; enhances academic fluency and accuracy of expression as well as knowledge about the Spanish language in its historical and geographical contexts; and helps participants identify best pedagogical practices based on theoretical understandings of language teaching and learning.
The program is designed for holders of a B.A. in Spanish or a related field, language educators, and literary scholars. The program also serves students who wish to continue study in a Ph.D. degree program in Spanish or a related field. The summer program at the Madrid Campus is especially suitable for high school teachers of Spanish (*).
