"Dear FLEX staff, I want to thank you for this opportunity that you gave me, I am having a wonderful time in the U.S. This program helped me gain more self confidence and improve myself in the way that I never could have if I stayed home. I am thankful for my host family, friends, other exchange students from all around the world and all the other people that I met during this process". This message with some photos attached we received from Ana Milojević, #FLEXprogram participant from Serbia, currently living in Longview, WA on this U.S. Government scholarship. Ana explained what FLEX is all about. We have nothing to add. Happy Holidays! #FLEXSerbia #FLEXalumni #holidays #exchnageourworlds

Getting ready for the party! The alumni are about to start popping in any moment! #FLEXprogram #FLEXSerbia #FLEXalumni
Today is Dan škole/School Day of the Veljko Ramadanović School for the Bind and Visually Impaired, located in Zemun, Serbia. The school carries the name of Veljko Ramadanović (1874-1943) - Serbian teacher and educational activist who adjusted Braille to the Serbian language. Two students from this school, Jelica and Nikola, are now members of the FLEX alumni community. Representatives of the American Councils had a chance to enjoy wonderful recitals, folk and modern dance performances, a short theatre play as well as wonderful signing of currennt students of the school. The video shows just a bit of the amazing athmosphere from the school today. Happy School Day, dear friends! #FLEXprogram #inclusion #FLEXalumni

The last round of the #FLEXprogram testing for students from all over Serbia who tried their luck in Belgrade a month ago has just started. Some of the students on the photo will make it to the list of those who will take off for the United States in August 2017. Who will the lucky ones be? Well, we still do not know. An independent panel of volunteers will select the U.S. Department of State stipend winners some time in April next year. Today is the U.N. International Volunteers Day, by the way! #IVD2016 #flexserbia #exchangestudents
International Volunteer Day, 5 December
Today (December 5, 2016) we observe the International Volunteer Day (IVD)- celebrating efforts of education, peace and development volunteers worldwide. This year's theme is #GlobalApplause – give volunteers a hand. Volunteering is a big thing on the #FLEXprogram! FLEX students are encouraged to contribute to their host communities by helping out in community activities. Many of FLEX alumni continue their good work when they return back to their home countries. FLEX Alumni Serbia have done a great deal of volunteer activities since 2005- the year of inception of the U.S. Department of State sponsored exchange program then known as #ASMYLE.
MIUSA - Putting Disability on the Map
December the 3rd is the UN Day of Persons with Disabilities. On this day we celebrate the struggle of our friends, sisters, brothers, parents, relatives, and neighbors with disabilities. In Serbia specifically on this day we also remind ourselves that it is a long way off towards a full inclusion of the persons with disability. Did you know that #FLEXprogram is an inclusive exchange program? Dozens of European and Eurasian students with motor, hearing, visual etc. impairments have taken part in this U.S. Department of State sponsored program. American Councils as a recruiting organization provides testing accommodations so that students with disabilities can participate on FLEX. Those students with disabilities who get awarded with scholarship travel to the U.S. to live with qualified host families and attend inclusive high schools. Prior to their exchange #MIUSA, the organization which advocates and provides training for independent life of people with disabilities, makes sure our students are well prepared for a year in the U.S. See this video which tells a story about MIUSA preparatory seminar for foreign exchange students with disabilities in Eugene, Oregon. #studentwithdisabilities #undayofpersonswithdisabilities #disability #flexserbia

Studying abroad opens up doors to many worlds, but it also casts a new light into the world we left behind. Many say it is healthy to from time to time remind ourselves and reflect about the past and the worlds we have been creating since early childhood. Nibbling our favorite biscuits or sweets while contemplating might help revive good feeling about who we are and where we come from. Isidora Stankovic, A-SMYLE/FLEX alumna from Niš, Serbia is studying at Smith College. Couple of days ago she received a package from her sister, parents, and grandparents who made sure to pack all the produce from Serbia Isidora once loved and which are at the moment not available for purchase in the U.S. Well, uživaj/enjoy Isidora- we are sure your new American friends will have a chance to try #plazmakeks, #smoki and #krembananica. #FLEXprogram #FLEXserbia #exchangeourworlds #nostalgia
