The lab headed by Sílvia Socorro is one of the groups working at Health Sciences Research Centre-University of Beira Interior (CICS-UBI) and the research lines encompass:
- Disclosing the molecular mechanisms underpinning infertility and carcinogenesis associated with metabolic and hormonal disorders;
- Identifying the essential targets modulating composition of male reproductive fluids and sperm functionality;
- Studying genomic variations affecting onset, progression and treatment of endocrine and hormone-dependent cancers;
- Developing innovative biomarkers and therapeutic options for management and treatment of hormone-dependent cancers and infertility disorders.

"Okay I’m going to say something now, This year was not the easiest; I get that And most of the time it was tough and tiring I might have been suffering, but I was in an excellent team They are among the strongest men and women that I know That is what it is to be one of us To be an investigator To be able to change the faith of the people That means when some people give up on themselves We work until we find a little hope to provide them The job we’ve to take on is to make a difference What some of the people of this group have done this year Sacrificing their own time, their own work For that of another That is the true meaning of teamwork If we quit because one day that goes wrong We quit on all the people we can help in the future Sometimes it’s better to live with the failure for a little while Please don’t give up on them Family, community, solidarity Those are the things that sustain us through hard times They are also the things that make our group strong There’s a family out there, and they’re just like mine, and they are counting on our work Help them, it’s what I signed up for, it’s why I do this “What am I doing? O estudo revela que a investigação oncológica em Portugal está concentrada num número relativamente pequeno de instituições, no qual estão presentes, porém, todas as regiões do país, embora o Centro Interior e o Sul tenham uma representação bastante mais pequena. A região Norte, particularmente a cidade do Porto, alberga as três instituições que mais publicam em oncologia e que figuram também como elos centrais das colaborações institucionais.
