A very good evening to you all and hope your weekdays was fine. As promised, we will be kicking off with the very first section in the poultry business value chain which is the SALES/DISTRIBUTION OF FERTILE EGGS. This is the beginning of life in poultry business and the last as well. The term fertile egg means egg good enough to bring a very good chick and this chick can be of any type depending on the type of the parent stock. When we say the beginning, eggs that will be taken from the parent stock are those ones that will be taken to the hatchery to bring forth another chick which will be used to start up business somewhere else. Note: That all kinds of poultry birds have a parent stock and actually the parent stock can still lay eggs for another parent stock. Also, when we say the last in the chain, we mean it to be a finished product of the poultry business because the birds have grown and passed through all the stages in the poultry value chain and all is left is to take care of them for maximum profit. TALKING ABOUT THE BUSINESS PART OF THIS, it means parent stock chicks will be bought and taken care of till the grow and start to lay. In raising them, you will need to ask yourself what breed of birds do you want to raise as we all know we have 3 main types of birds: the cockerel, broiler and layer. So you will need to know the kind of birds you want to produce before getting the parent stock. Also, though raising them is just like raising a normal layers bird but you will have to watch out for the following: Monitor crop fill to ensure chicks are feeding. Use chick behavior as an indicator of satisfactory brooding temperature. Achieve early body-weight targets to facilitate successful rearing and make sure they are almost uniform in weight. Never decrease feed allowance during rearing. Feed allowance should either be held or increased. Give birds the correct feeding and drinking space. Excess males should not be immediately discarded. Depending on cage size and mating characteristics of the specific variety's male, it may be necessary to increase or decrease number of males. Determine by observation of male behavior and fertility assessment by fresh egg breakout. Hatching eggs should be gathered a minimum of twice daily or more during extremely hot weather. Eggs should be sanitized using products specifically developed for this purpose. Hatching eggs should not be kept longer than 10 days from the day they were laid. Best hatches will result when eggs from 3 to 7 days of age are used so make sure you have a market to sell to before starting and as of this moment, demand for fertile eggs is quit high as there quit a number of hatchery looking for hatchable eggs. Thanks for reading.
