Good evening accountants, We wish to share an update with you. This will be beneficial to members in practice and students preparing for exams. IASB has issued an amendment, for annual periods beginning on or after 1st January, 2016 on IAS 16, Property, plant and equipment and IAS 41, agriculture. This amendment has reclassified bearer plant under IAS 16, PPE instead of IAS 41. Now what is a bearer plant? A bearer plant is defined as a livingplant that is used in the production or supply of agricultural produce, is expected to bear produce for more than one period and has a remote likelihood of being sold as agricultural produce, except for incidental scrap sales. Example of bearer plants include Palm trees, Mango trees, etc. Under the previous IAS 41, bearer plants are expected to be accounted for using IAS 41 fair value for biological assets. However, the revised IAS 41 and IAS 16 has reclassified this class of biological asset under PPE. This means that after biological assets must have finished undergoing biological transformation and ready to start producing, its fair value should be determined which will be adopted as the deemed cost of the asset. The useful life of the asset should also be determined for depreciation purposes. An entity may wish to apply either the Cost model or Revaluation model as required by IAS 16. Therefore, for members in practice that have clients that own agricultural farms, please note that their bearer plants should be accounted for using IAS 16 and not IAS 41 anymore. It should be included as part of the entity's Property , Plant and Equipments. Thank you. Uchechukwu Chinedu. ACA
