The mission of the Institute for Marine and  Atmospheric Research Utrecht (IMAU) is to contribute to the basic science of the oceans, atmosphere and cryosphere. To achieve this we try to maintain an open and stimulating research and study environment in which students and staff are inspired to give their best. Education is an essential part of our mission and our researchers are therefore active teachers in the bachelor and master programs of our university.

Oceanographic data converted into music. Oceanographers Erik van Sebille and Will de Ruijter (IMAU) worked together with composer Stef Veldhuis. This resulted in unique musical compositions. The event took place last week in Utrecht.

Have you ever wondered what the ocean sounds like? Not the waves breaking on the beach, but the ocean currents themselves? Oceanographers Erik van Sebille and Will de Ruijter have been teaming up with composer Stef Veldhuis and translated the data from Argo instruments that float around in the ocean into musical compositions. On October 31st, these compositions will be performed by a professional string quartet. You are most welcome to come and listen to this unique performance! Note that some of the (short) presentations will be in Dutch, but obviously the musical performances transcend any language boundaries. See the link below for more information.

The IMAU is offering a PhD position in the Atmospheric Physics and Chemistry research group: Modelling volcanic eruptions using sulfur isotopes.

An international team of scientists found evidence for a sea-level highstand 1.2 million years ago which is three times higher than calculated in the current ice sheet models. IMAU researcher Bas de Boer designed the new ice-sheet model that was used in the study.
