HUMANS OF NHL STENDEN || Ever since high school I have been coping with depression. I was nothing and couldn’t do anything; I had very low self-esteem. I rather stayed at home to lose myself in videogames. This is where I could build my own identity, a place for me to be someone. At my first job, these insecurities really got the better of me; it felt like being throttled. And I didn’t fare any better with my second job. This is when my general practitioner referred me to GGZ (mental healthcare institution). Three weeks later I was in a day treatment programme. Bit by bit, I started to rebuild my life. Even in those hard times, I stayed positive. I was convinced that someday, a job would come along where I would fit in perfectly. I found it right here at NHL Stenden. It’s my dream job for sure. Instead of hiding behind computer displays, I enjoy being in full view at the Service Square. HUMANS OF NHL STENDEN || ‘When I was five years old, my mother taught me how to crochet. I was soon able to make my own stuffed animals, because they were too expensive to buy back then. It was a way for me to cheer myself up; I could put my feelings into the crocheted dolls and animals. Three years ago I started my own company called Crochet Happy Plushie. I design, make, and sell amigurumi, which are crocheted Japanese dolls. They are more than just toys to me; each little creation has its own soul and personality. The designs are mine and I sell them as patterns on my website. When our house started to get too crowded with amigurumi, my boyfriend set an ultimatum: ‘either throw them away, or sell them.’ That’s how it started. Nowadays I’m a fairly well-known name in the crochet community. My dolls will be part of the largest amigurumi-exposition in the world, which will be held in New York in the coming months. HUMANS OF NHL STENDEN || ‘I never would have guessed that one video could change my life like this. Saturday 12 November 2016 – I remember the date well – a championship football match was scheduled to be played by my SC Franeker junior team. Prior to the game I asked myself how I could motivate the boys just a little bit more. This is where the idea came to me to do the match preparations as a rap. It was my plan to let the parents enjoy the moment later on as well, so I had someone film it. What happened next was nothing short of remarkable. Things escalated quickly. This preparatory ‘rap talk’ I performed was uploaded on Facebook at 4 p.m., but the next morning it was viewed a stunning 600,000 times. Not only did it generate publicity, but I also got an invitation for the Ruud van Nistelrooy Foundation scholarship. I even got to do a screen test at ‘Het Klokhuis’ (a Dutch informative television programme, aimed at youth). Currently, I am a youth coach at SC Cambuur and I am a presenter at Cambuur TV. H U M A N S O F N H L S T E N D E N || ‘I was on Lesbos from 4 to 12 November to volunteer in a refugee camp for the Because We Carry foundation. When I found out about their efforts, I instantly knew: I want to go there. As a volunteer, I helped with daily tasks: making and serving breakfast, cleaning up, organising activities, catching mice, and driving supplies to and from. It was my goal to show the refugees that there are people who care about them. I can’t change the world, but I could show them: you are not alone. What I’ve seen there is gut-wrenching and heart-warming at the same time. I feel that this experience has changed me.
