The Institute of Applied Educational Sciences is a Research Institute at the University of Luxembourg. The description, documentation, analysis, explanation, understanding, and development of structures and of teaching and learning processes are at the heart of the Institute of Applied Educational Sciences. We study learning and teaching in a range of contexts with the aim of developing, understanding and improving the quality of education.Contexts of research can range from within classrooms, to extra‐curricular activities, and outside of school settings, including homes. Currently, the researchers carry out projects in the fields of science education, language, math, motor learning and information and communication technologies.

Our research focuses on the manifold interactions between teachers and learners (as well as other people involved in the teaching/learning processes such as caregivers), within the context of the respective institutions (e.g. schools, the “maison relais”, homes). We aim for the systematic, empirical-‐methodological examination and theoretical representation (models) of central aspects of teaching and learning.

Quantitative and qualitative research methods are facilitated alongside systematic observation procedures, participatory research approaches, standardized tests and experimental, resp. quasi-‐experimental methods, qualitative methods of ethnographic observation, biographically narrative interviews as well as action research are also increasingly employed.

Navigating teachers’ and parents’ language practices and ideologies

We're happy to invite you to a Public Lecture organized by AES Members Claudine Kirsch & Nikos Gogonas on "Navigating teachers’ and parents’ language practices and ideologies" by Dr. Vally Lytra, Goldsmiths, University of London. Time: Tuesday, 26 April 2016, 14:00 - 17:00 Place: Campus Belval, Maison du Savoir, room 4180; 2, avenue de l'Université, L-4365 Esch-sur-Alzette In this presentation, Dr Lytra will share findings from two research projects to explore the interrelationship between majority and minority languages, standards and vernaculars and the social values associated with them from parents' and teachers' perspectives. The research context involves two Turkish complementary schools in London, UK and a Greek complementary school in Lausanne, Switzerland. Complementary schools (also known as community, supplementary, or heritage schools) emerge organically from the desire of parents and other community members to maintain and develop the community language, culture, history and identity among the younger generation in a diasporic context. Besides being important sites for children’s language and literacy learning as well as their personal and collective identification, they provide parents and children spaces for socialization and a crucial link between older and younger generations. http://wwwen.uni.lu/universite/actualites/evenements/navigating_teachers_and_parents_language_practices_and_ideologies
