Social media for business advertising and a negative experience of mine. Being self-employed and running a business where one carries out work remotely and advertises online through Facebook etc. can present difficulties. This week I encountered a problem with social media, i.e., Facebook. Like many other people experience with their personal accounts at some stage, I encountered "trolling". A potential client who I spent three days in total with discussing their requirements via messages agreed to go ahead with the work - I explained that I accept payment via Paypal or cheque/postal orders if they prefer and that I require a deposit before starting work – this is absolutely necessary when working for people nationwide when one is not meeting the client face-to-face. They wanted my bank account details to pay the deposit but I do not give these out - for obvious security reasons when dealing with strangers. They agreed to pay through Paypal and I spent time drafting up an email to them with questions I needed them to answer to complete the work etc. (about half an hour). After all of this they said that they wanted to meet in person to give me the deposit - I work from home and do not meet clients there ordinarily so I organised to meet in civic offices locally - they were unhappy with this and aggressively kept arguing to meet in my home - this in itself made me uncomfortable/suspicious so I told them that it was either meet in the public location or pay via Paypal. They were very annoyed about this and later that evening they had written a slanderous and untrue review of my business – this resulted in me having to remove the review facility from my business page (as one cannot just remove one review) meaning that my 5 star rating that I had up until that point is no longer visible. I ask people to keep in mind when dealing with businesses online that there are easy ways to decipher if the person is reputable etc. – check their posts – do these seem genuine - how long have they been in business – do they give a geographical location, phone number, email contact details etc. do they have many likes etc.? Remember that people operating legitimate businesses and advertising through Facebook are real people – don’t waste their time and treat them any differently than you would a person face-to-face etc. – this should go for all interactions both personal and business on Facebook and other social media outlets. Having said that, the majority of people are nice to deal with - I suppose there are just some downsides to operating online!
