Well done to all Lions, nurses and friends who helped out at last weekends Diabetes Awareness event that took place at the foot of Croagh Patrick on Reek Sunday. 2 Minute talk could save your life. Des Ryan and Selina Gill from Westport Lions Club are playing an important role helping Lions Club International to reshape their Diabetes Screening Programme. The traditional way of testing using a “pin prick” has just been stopped due to the new requirement of medical insurance. Diabetes is a global epidemic and on the rise.It is estimated that at least 30,000 people In Ireland are walking around with diabetes completely unaware of it. Reducing the prevalence of Diabetes and improving quality of life for those diagnosed is one of the International Lions Club objectives. Westport Lions Club will be hosting a diabetes screening awareness event at Croagh Patrick on Reek Sunday, the 28th of July. The good news is Type 2 Diabetes can be prevented in high-risk individuals by lifestyle intervention. Pilgrims will be offered a free consultation and assessment with a qualified nurse to determine if they are high-risk. They will be provided with advice and referred to their doctor if necessary for a follow up. The assessment has been developed by Diabetes Ireland, HSE and Croí. Diabetes is a lifelong condition caused by a lack, or insufficiency of insulin. Insulin is a hormone made by your pancreas with a vital role to break down sugar in the body. Diabetes is therefore characterised by high levels of sugar in the bloodstream. These high sugar levels in the bloodstream can result in heart disease, strokes, kidney failure, nerve damage and blindness, all of which can greatly affect the quality of a person’s life. We at Westport Lions Club are thrilled that the Mayo Hospice is built! The #MayoRoscommonHospice Foundation was founded by members of the WLC a few decades ago and with sheer determination, hard work and fundraising by so many it shows what a wider community can do. It is an amazing facility, designed to be non-clinical, patient and family friendly, yet functional. We wish Martina and all the team all the best in operating this facility. 100 volunteers are required to donate 4 hours per week to help run the facility. So if you have spare time and you're looking for something to do please contact Mayo Roscommon hospice. Also, on-going donations required to operate the facility into the future. Roscommon hospice due to open soon, as planning permission granted.
