Arthroscopic correction of femoroacetabular impingement improves athletic performance in male athletes

New research published this week in Knee Surgery, Sports Traumatology, Arthroscopy: "Arthroscopic correction of femoroacetabular impingement improves athletic performance in male athletes" The authors of this study (Karen Mullins, Michael Hanlon & Patrick Carton) found that symptomatic FAI causes substantial reductions in athletic performance compared to healthy controls, consequently placing symptomatic athletes at a distinct performance disadvantage. Following arthroscopic correction of the bony deformities and repair of the protective labrum, athletic performance in previously symptomatic individuals is restored to a level comparable to asymptomatic, healthy controls at 1 year post-op. Always great to receive updates from our patients, and to see athletes back playing and competing pain free. Emmet had arthroscopic (keyhole) surgery on both his hips 1 year ago, to correct his hip impingement. Since then, Emmet has returned to playing for his GAA football club without any restrictions. In September 2018, and 6 months following his surgery, Emmet and his team won the title of Mayo Division A Minor Champions for the first time in their Club’s history! Following this, Emmet successfully reached and played in the final of the Minor Connaught Cup and the Division A Final with the Westport U21 squad and he is currently playing mid-field with the Westport Senior team. "A big Thank You to Mr Carton and all his team for the care and professional conduct shown to Emmet. The surgery has enabled Emmet to continue playing football and he is looking forward to the coming season in 2019, where he once again, hopes to achieve great moments… Warmest Regards from Emmet and Angela (Mum)" Well done Emmet, a great achievement!
