It's that time of year again folks. I always like to remind people to be on the lookout for ticks on their pets.

** TICKS & PROTECTING OUR PETS ** Ticks are little parasites that feed on the blood of their “host”. They live in grassland and wooded areas. They are attracted to warmth and often seek out unsuspecting mammals like dogs. Once they find the host, they will usually attach themselves in areas such as around the ears, between the toes, the inside of the legs and in skin folds. They bury their mouth in the skin and begin feeding from the blood. While not all ticks transmit or carry diseases, it is important that the tick is quickly and safely removed from your pet (please see the link below). Following a tick bite, keep a close eye on your dog, looking out for any symptoms or out of character behavior. Some symptoms include fatigue, weakness, lameness and joint swelling. If you have any concerns please contact your veterinary clinic as soon as possible so a diagnosis and treatment can be provided. Tips to prevent your dog getting tick bites: -Use a good quality spot on treatment such as Frontline, which is available from your veterinary clinic. -Use a tick collar -Use a parasite repellent sprays, shampoos, natural remedies & medications -Try to avoid areas with tall grass and wood as ticks are prevalent in these areas The product I use to remove ticks is the O'TOM / Tick Twister. Having previously used tweezers which I found to be messy and unreliable, the Tick Twister is a breath of fresh air!
