REMINDER- RELIGIOUS SERVICES ACCESS FOR DEAF & HARD OF HEARING. Chelsea Schafer is a student at Roanoke College, who is studying this semester at University College Cork. She is carrying out research on how Deaf & hard of hearing people access religious services. Travellers hail 'historic day' over ethnic recognition

👏🏽😊👏🏽 Today, in Ireland our indigenous Traveller Community were finally recognised as an ethic minority. While many people know of negative stories when it comes to the Traveller Community- did you know we were the 1st county in Ireland to secure a GP Access Policy which provides sign language interpreting access to Deaf people when visiting their GP/Doctor? This policy was achieved when our service supported a Deaf traveller in an equality case after she was denied interpreting access by our local Health service. We supported & fought this case in memory of another Deaf traveller who was also denied access before she sadly died of advanced cervical cancer at the age of 39. The GP policy protects Deaf people's right to access. Today, the Traveller community finally secures their own rights & Deaf travellers too. Our Manager was at a Patient research workshop today & he was thrilled to hear two Traveller Advocates acknowledge our work in securing the GP Acces Policy. They also expressed their support for the legal recognition of Irish Sign Language. The Traveller community celebrates today & we know many of them will celebrate with us when we finally secure official recognition of Irish Sign Language 👏🏽😊👏🏽 #TravellerEthnicity #IrishTravellers #TravellerCommunity #GPAccessPolicy #KerryDeafResourceCentre #IrishSignLanguage #ISLRecognition https://www.google.ie/amp/www.rte.ie/amp/856293/

This week, our Manager Willie White was invited to a meeting with Senator Jerry Buttimer & Senator Tim Lombard to talk about the official recognition of Irish Sign Language (ISL). For an update in ISL, check out https://www.facebook.com/IrishSignLanguageRecognitionCampaign/ Willie says "It was great to hear from the Senators that the Government & Minister Mc Garth fully support the Bill. They believe once amendments are drafted & have Cabinet approval, there will be no delays in the remaining stages being brought before the Seanad for approval. Thereafter, while further work will still need to be done, the Senators are optimistic that legislation will eventually be enacted" The meeting was organised by the Cork Deaf Association (CDA) & included Gerrie O'Grady, Susan O'Callaghan & Andrew Geary from CDA, Linda Rankin from Cork Deaf Enterprises (CDE), Graham O'Shea from Cork Deaf Club (CDC), Dr. John Bosco Conama from the Centre for Deaf Studies (CDS) in Trinity College & Willie representing our service Kerry Deaf Resource Centre (KDRC). Our service would like to extend our sincere thanks to Gerrie O'Grady (CDA) for inviting Willie to the meeting. Thanks also to Catherine for her interpreting work. Fingers crossed that ISL secures official recognition in 2017 🤞 #IrishSignLanguage #ISL #ISLOfficialRecognition #ISLRecognition #CorkDeafAssociation #CorkDeafClub #CorkDeafEnterprises #CentreForDeafStudies #JerryButtimer #TimLombard #KerryDeafResourceCentre #WillieWhiteCODA

Is your child Deaf or hard of hearing and between 1st and 6th class in a mainstream primary school? Would you be interested in your child taking part in a study on reading? Dr Elizabeth Mathews (Dublin City University) and Dr Margaret O’Donnell (Independent Researcher) are recruiting participants for their study examining literacy outcomes for pupils who are Deaf or hard of hearing in mainstream primary schools. You will receive a copy of your child’s test results if you choose to take part. To be involved in this research study, your child must: ·be between 1st class - 6th class in a mainstream school; ·be in a mainstream class (i.e. not enrolled in any category of special class/unit) - it is okay if they receive resource teaching outside the mainstream class; ·be on the visiting teachers’ active caseload (i.e. receiving occasional visits in the school); ·it is okay if they have an additional special educational need other than deafness, but deafness should be their main reason for receipt of educational supports (as determined by the school). To receive more information on the study, email Dr Elizabeth Mathews at elizabeth.mathews@dcu.ie or phone 018842247, providing your name, address and contact telephone number, along with your child's name, the name of their school, and what class they are currently in. Recruitment of participants will end on 24th February 2017. Please note: full informed consent will be sought from you, your child and the school before taking part. Yours sincerely, Margaret & Elizabeth Twitter: @DeafEdIreland #DeafAwareTeachers #ElizabethMatthews #MargaretODonnell #KerryDeafResourceCentre #KDRC #KerryDeaf #DeafNews #DeafIreland #DeafEducation #DeafLiteracy (Image copied from Hinguar Community School website)
