U12 Major Clara v Mullingar Athletic Eagles The Wind That Shakes The Eagles Conditions were not ideal for the Wednesday night MSL U12 Major tie between Mullingar Athletic Eagles & Clara Town in Clara. Following a footballing lesson at the weekend when the Eagles won 3-1 in Gainstown the home side tonight were forgiven for playing a more conservative dogged game as they endeavoured to shut out the Eagles at all cost. The Eagles attempted to play the ball as much as possible however the home sides cautious approach and long ball tactics along with the windy conditions seemed to be the main theme of the evening. The best moment of the first half fell to Cillian Kelly whose shot was brilliantly saved by the Clara goalkeeper. The visitors never looked under threat at the back, yet again Tadgh Kelly put in a five star performance to dismiss any attack by the hosts. Hayden Nolan & Emmet Brennan played well as they shored up the flanks, also dealing well with the many of the high balls that came their way. Credit to Clara though as they clearly did not want a repeat of Saturday's performance where they were so dominated for such long periods. This was not a game for the football purists with stubbornness and caution surpassing any sign of flair or skill. With much of the match played in midfield Colm Duffy can be very proud of such a composed display as he looked on a different level to those around him. Talisman Matthew Thornton fell victim to some heavy challenges as he fought tooth and nail for his team. As the game wore on it became more evident that Clara's best opportunity to score would come from free kick or corner. The Eagles however tried passing down the field, Gavin Pierce and Sean Tully were prime examples as they used the ball well when in possession, as did Jack McCann, making a fine recovery from his recent injury. Captain for the night Callum Lynch came closest to scoring late on only for the Clara keeper to make a brilliant double save to deny the in-form striker. It would have been very difficult to see the home team score were that have gone in. The Eagles had all their attackers Callum O'Halloran, Stephen Battle, Simon Jorgensen & Matthew Doyle on the pitch in an effort to find the breakthrough but it wasn't to be and this was not an evening for football. Mohamed Mugtaba & Ruairi O'Dowd also fought hard in the blustery midfield, and on another day when the weather was not such a factor things might have been different. At the end the Mullingar boys can be very proud on their two games against a title rival, who themselves could not defeat the newly promoted high fliers over two games. In an away match against the team that currently sits in first place for the Eagle's goalkeepers of Darragh Mullen & Carl McCormack to have not made a save from a shot on target says a lot about how far this team has come in such a short space of time. Man of the match must go to the Clara keeper who saved his sides skin at the death as well as a fantastic first half save. Colm Duffy was probably the best Eagle on the pitch but he was closely followed by Tadgh Kelly and Matthew Thornton. Well done to the Offaly side for turning things around after the loss at the weekend. They can feel very satisfied with a clean sheet on a night where defence won the fight. The Eagles have now only conceded 4 goals in 17 League games in the Major Division, this is a outstanding statistic in their debut season. Next up are Banagher in the Cup, best of luck Eagles.

Mullingar Athletics U14 Tigers are League Champions! Congratulations to Mullingar Athletics U14 Tigers who claimed the U14 West league title yesterday. A mid week 2 nil home win over local side Grange Utd piled pressure on fellow contenders Banagher Utd who could only manage a 2 all draw on Saturday ensuring the Tigers can not be caught despite one game remaining. Great credit must go to team manager Brendan Molloy and coaches Stevie Norris and Tye Waterhouse who oversaw a hugely successful season and secured promotion to the Major Division next season. Well done to all the players for the committment and winning attitude and to their parents for the huge support they gave to the team - Well done ALL very well deserved.
