WHAT IS SPORTS AND REMEDIAL MASSAGE THERAPY? Sports Massage Therapy Sports Massage Therapy uses a number of differing techniques to help the athlete to prepare or recover from training, competition or injury. Deep tissue muscle techniques are used and these are different from those used in traditional therapeutic massage. Regular sports massage can maintain good muscle condition improve flexibility Aid lymphatic drainage It can also help in injury rehabilitation and is beneficial in pre-event, during event, and post-event situations. Remedial Massage Therapy Remedial Massage techniques can be used to treat neck and shoulder problems back ache hip problems knee problems ankle problems Chronic muscular aches and pains Remedial massage can be very effective after injuries, accidents, long term problems, or certain medical conditions (such as Parkinson’s disease, Ankylosing Spondylitis, Multiple Sclerosis, etc). WHO CAN BENEFIT FROM SPORTS & REMEDIAL MASSAGE THERAPY It isn’t just top athletes that can benefit from Sports and Remedial Massage Therapy. Nowadays performance in sport amongst recreational athletes has improved greatly and the standards continue to rise. I believe that many recreational athletes are performing at a standard today that could have been considered professional or elite 30 years ago. As an athlete you are investing a lot of time to your training in order to get the optimum performance back in competition. Regular Sports and Remedial Massage Therapy can help enhance your performance and prevent injury. Additionally it isn’t just people that participate in sport that can benefit – I have a number of clients I see who do not take part in any sport on a regular basis. Many people spend long hours working at desks on PC’s and this has an effect on shoulder, back, and neck muscles – usually tension – and this can be dealt with through the techniques I use and with some very good results. WHAT ARE THE BENEFITS OF SPORTS AND REMEDIAL MASSAGE THERAPY? The benefits of Sport & Remedial Massage Therapy are it enhances performance and enjoyment of sport through physical, physiological and psychological effects. Sport & Remedial Massage Therapy will help with increased and improved circulation which will have physical benefits such as removing muscle waste, such as lactic acid, and restores nutrition and encourages the muscles to take up oxygen which will help them to recover quickly from both hard training sessions and minor soft tissue injuries. It can help stretch the muscle fibers, possibly in a way that the individual is not able to do themselves by normal methods – the fibers can be stretched both lengthways and sideways. Massage will also help release tension from muscles. Stretching can also be done to the fascia surrounding the muscle which can help release tension. Sport & Remedial Massage Therapy can break down scar tissue and adhesions leading to tissues that are inflexible and prone to injury and pain. Sports massage can also help improve tissue elasticity. Hard training can make the tissues hard and inelastic. Massage can stretch the tissues and improve the elasticity - this can lead to an increase in quality and quantity of training. Regular Sport & Remedial Massage Therapy can improve flexibility and range of movement. Sports massage can also play a part in the early identification of potential problems that an athlete could be facing. Preventative treatment can be administered and training advice given therefore preventing possible future injury. Early identification of injuries can mean that scar tissue and adhesions can be broken down, excessive muscle tension can be released, and the improved circulation benefits provided by sports massage can improve healing. Secondary problems, which can be caused by tense muscles, for example, which lead to joint or muscle imbalances can be dealt with before over-use injuries hamper the athlete. Sports massage could also help out with improved self-awareness for the athlete and an improvement in technique which could lead to both injury prevention and improved performance. By educating the athlete in stretching techniques and self-treatment techniques. Massage can also promote a state of relaxation, this can be of psychological benefit to an athlete directly before or after an important event as it could help to reduce anxiety and tension, and, also help to invigorate the body if a brisk massage is performed. Other psychological benefits could be that it helps place an athlete at ease – this could be extremely beneficial if an athlete is experiencing a slight injury which the therapist can deal with directly before an event enabling the athlete to compete. Sport & Remedial Massage Therapy can also have remedial benefits and offer a remedy for muscleskeletal problems caused by postural and structural, occupational, environmental, emotional, or, medical factors. WHAT SPORTS AND REMEDIAL MASSAGE THERAPY ENTAILS? I use a number of different techniques within the treatments I do. Effleurage – stroking technique, at a superficial or deep pressure and in a longitudinal or transverse direction Petrissage – a kneading technique used to stimulate circulation, and, loosen and soften tissues. Friction – a deep technique used to break down scar tissue or adhesions. Tapotement - a technique used to stimulate the muscles Soft Tissue Release– a technique used to stretch the muscle fibers by creating a lock in certain areas. Very effective at dealing with adhesions. Neuromuscular Technique – a technique that is very effective at loosening tense muscles. Muscle Energy Technique – a technique used to treat tight muscle groups and improve range of movement. Very effective.
