Osteopathy is a system of diagnosis and treatment for a wide range of medical conditions. Osteopathy treats the structural and functional mechanics of the body i.e the muscles, bones, ligaments and nerves, thus relieving pain, discomfort and immobility.
Osteopathy seeks to find and treat the root cause of an injury. In order for any injury to heal it requires both a good blood and nerve supply. A good blood supply brings nutrition and oxygen to all cells of the body allowing them to repair and renew themselves. The nerve supply tells the spinal cord how a certain area is functioning and even a tiny degree of entrapment on the nerve can cause chronic pain.
Osteopaths use hands on techniques to manipulate and improve the blood and nerve supply, thus eliminating pain and restoring the patient back to full health.
Osteopaths use a wide range of orthopaedic tests and hands on palpation to diagnose injuries. Once a diagnosis has been formed the osteopath will explain to the patient what injury has happened, how it happened and how they intend to treat it.
Treatment generally starts with the relaxing and stretching of tight muscles and stiff joints using massage and manipulative techniques.
