Over 300 people turned out in what were ideal conditions for the running of the 8th annual Kibeacanty 8K Turkey run in aid of Gort Cancer support Centre and Galway Hospice. 50 children took part in the 1K Kids run which started at 1.00 before the main event at 1.30. Peterswells Paul Caulfield last year’s winner was the clear favourite at the off with Willie Fitzgerald also from Peterswell expected to push him all the way, however it was Derrybrien man Shane Walsh who was the leader at the half way mark from the two fore mentioned runners with Michael Hehir from Beagh also in the mix. With just over 1K to Walsh made his move and the leaders were stretched with Walsh powering home as winner in a time of 28:47 from Caulfield in Second in 29:06 and Fitzgerald in 3rd in 29:35 In the Women’s race Alma Hanevy won in a time of 32:57 from Mary Kelly in 2nd in 35:13 and Deirdre Devaney in 3rd in 35:18 Declan Fahey won the Donohue Cup for the second year as the first Kilbeacanty man home in 32:32 from Mike Coen in 33:21 and Enda Craddock in 33:40 with Aisling Glynn the first Kilbeacanty women home in 43 min. In the newly introduced Pride of the Parish event the local lads held out for victory with Declan Fahey, Mike Coen, Enda Craddock and Justin Fahey coming home for Kilbeacanty ahead of Beagh in 2nd and Gort in 3rd . In the 7 years that this race has been run the competition to win the Donohue Cup for first Kilbeacanty Man home has been fierce. John Fordham claimed the first two titles in 2010 and 2011 from Brian Fahey before Brian upped his game and came in to win ahead of John in 2012. Brian was back to win again in 2013 posting a Kilbeacanty course record of 31.09 and when pushed all the way by Keith Reilly who has posted the 2nd fasted time 31.52 from a Kilbeacanty Man so far. In 2014 a young Dermot Kelly surprised everyone to take the title before in his 6 attempt Justin Fahey came home in front to claim the title in 2015. Last year 2016 Declan Fahey claimed his first title. So will we have a new name on the Donohue Cup this year ? or will Declan Fahey make it 2 in a row.
