Below is the design process involved in the Tea & Coffee presentation boxes as mentioned on the Ray Darcy Show By John & Francis Brennan. 'le thé ou le café' We love new and fresh ideas, who says tea and coffee has to be served on a boring tray, let’s add some fun and intrigue to the process! Our brief was to make a self-contained unit to hold, a kettle, a cafetière, two cups, spoons, sugar, milk, biscuits and chocolates. Each having their own specially designed compartment. Where to start...well I am a firm believer in researching the objective, and in doing so I found the most incredible self-contained boxes as used by chemists and apothecaries in the Georgian era. Inspiration was found, now to fit everything into a neat package. Mahogany was the obvious choice for construction, the purpose of the boxes are to be used in the 5 star Park Hotel Kenmare, opening its doors in 1897. Why mahogany also made the obvious choice not to mention the warm luscious tones of the wood but was the fact that the interior of the boxes was to be made from mahogany originally used in the hotel, need I say more! In the process of design, we made three separate sample 'mock-up' boxes from ply, bringing the appearance and concept off the page and into life. Throughout this process each time presenting the latest and working with all relevant parties, tweaking and adjusting little touches until we had the perfectly suited self-contained tea & coffee box. Next was to source and acquire the hard-wear, hinges, locking catch and handles. Quality solid British brass was the only choice, and in this mass produced world finding the right pieces was not easy, but something we achieved with a little patience. Making the box was the next challenge, hidden mitre joints, matching beautifully detailed grain pattern right across the box, cutting and fitting the many joints that all have to line up perfectly smooth, and believe me special attention was put into making sure they do. Little edge mouldings and fret cut details are a little detail to define the box, tying together beautifully with uniformity. Brass dome head slot screws were selected to complement the era of the hotel and each and every one is lined up parallel, a sign of true attention to detail. Custom designed Park Hotel Kenmare & Relais & Châteaux logoed badges were designed engraved. All in all a massive amount of time was spent on creating something very unique and special, completely custom in every way. Every little angle has to be 100% and time spent here is well spent. #relaischateaux #Parkhotelkenmare #JoopDuyn #RayDarcyShow #Kenmare #RTE #FrancisBrennan #Irelandsbluebook RTÉ RTÉ One Park Hotel Kenmare Ray Darcy Show Relais & Châteaux Joop Duyn & Sons Antique Furniture Restoration Francis Brennan Ireland's Blue Book

We just had to get some professional pictures of our latest conservation job, Nick suggested to shoot the cabinet in-situ in the workshop rather than a clean crisp studio. This was done to give a real feel to the images, a look into the conservation process, adding depth and layers to the continued story of the cabinet. Absolutely thrilled with the results. Be sure to have a look at the before pictures in the previous post to see the transformation. Italian Baroque period ebonized wooden cabinet with bone inlay on stand. Main construction of coniferous, with ebony veneer and moulding of drawers in ebony. Comprising of 16 drawers, 4 of which are behind a central door, flanked by two columns. Topped with a heavily decorated architectural drawer. Cabinet has a decorative top frieze sitting on a stand with turned tapered legs with inlay stringing, turned stretcher with central finial. Various scrolls, grotesques and fantastic animal motifs decorate the cabinet, some of which are carved into bone with black highlight detailing and others carved into ebony with gold highlight detailing. This is the final and most interesting piece of an ongoing conservation project completed in conjunction with JCA Architects Cork and The Presentation Sisters of Nano Nagle Place Cork.
