"Bikram Hot Yoga" was introduced to Galway in 2005 by Galway native Tracy O’Mahoney and has now established itself as the West of Ireland’s leading Yoga Studio. In 2005, Tracy spent months in Los Angeles immersed in an in-depth study of Bikram Yoga with Yoga Masters Bikram and Rajashree Choudhury. He personally trains and certifies his instructors to ensure that his methods and philosophy are preserved and properly taught. Although Tracy is the only qualified Bikram Yoga Instructor in Galway city, she has a constant flow of Guest Teachers from all around the world visit and teach at her Studio. Currently she has Instructors from Canada, Australia and Cuba on her team.

Bikram Yoga is the 26 postures Sequence selected and developed by Bikram Choudhury from Hatha Yoga. Bikram Yoga is a fun, challenging and invigorating 90 minute work out for all levels! It has been proved and experienced by millions that these 26 postures systematically work every part of the body, to give all the internal organs, all the veins, all the ligaments, and all the muscles everything they need to maintain optimum health and maximum function.  Each component takes care of something different in the body, and yet they all work together synergistically, contributing to the success of every other one, and extending its benefits. Followers describe the Bikram experience as "euphoric", "a natural high", "intense", and "almost supernatural".

The room is intentionally hot – 105 F making it the perfect environment for Bikram yoga to work its magic! The heat helps you to do your postures optimally, allowing you to go deeper and safer, minimising the risk of injury. Regular profuse sweating generated by the heat will flush toxins out of the body, promote relaxation and well-being, accelerate cardiovascular action and facilitate calorie burning (1,000 cals per class). It is common to lose centimetres of shape in a very short period of time.  Bikram Yoga has many celebrity clients including David Beckam, Madonna, Gwyneth Paltrow and Christy Turlington who all praise it for keeping their bodies in shape.

Regular practice of Bikram yoga strengthens the immune system, improves posture and spinal alignment, strengthens joints, eases back pain, tone muscles and relieves stress and tension. It also builds strength, stamina and flexibility and this is why many of Galway’s top sports men and women attend classes regularly. “Team sports produce regular injuries, and many players, including Mayo Football team player Trevor Mortimor, have stated that they see definite improvements in their flexibility and chronic pain relief, which in turn improves their game. Local football, hurling and rugby teams are also keen to take part in their own team yoga sessions at Bikam Yoga Galway, to promote team building and to work on players’ unique skills”.

Bikram Yoga is for everyBody! Just push yourself to your own personal edge and you will get 100% of the benefits. Each class should be challenging. How quickly you progress will depend entirely on you – no natural ability is required. It will have little to do with how perfectly you do the postures. Instead, it will have to with how well you understand what you are trying to accomplish in each posture. This understanding comes with time. How you try your best determines how strong and supple your muscles and joints become in comparison to the point at which you began. In yoga there is no standard of comparison except yourself. To be perfect in yoga is to do the best you can! Classes today (Mon) with Tracy at 4:30pm & 6:30pm. No booking required. www.BikramYogaGalway.ie

Conor McGregor did us proud, but Floyd Mayweather had the advantage of practicing Bikram Yoga in his bid to beat McGregor! Mayweather first started practicing Bikram as part of his training regime back in 2012. Before that, he told the Las Vegas Sun that he had never stretched in his entire career until he began doing Bikram yoga. “I think I can push myself and perform a lot better with Bikram yoga". Tuladandasana..... the powerful balacing stick pose! Only 10 seconds long but a great workout for the whole of the body! As with all Bikram postures, preparation and alignment is key to not only getting the best out of a posture but also making it more enjoyable! Most beginners will try and keep their head up to see where they are going, but when the head and arms are separated the energy is dissipated and you won’t feel as strong. Keep the chin up so you can breathe and bring the body back a couple of inches – this will again open up the chest allowing you to have more puff for the posture! Keep those knees locks, toes pointed, arms upright and you're sorted! Continuously stretch forwards and backwards "like a natural human tug of war". Balancing Stick opens up the chest and works the heart, develops determination, focus and concentration, & increases body strength like nothing else! Enjoy! Class this evening (Tue) with Tracy at 6:30pm. All levels welcome. www.BikramYogaGalway.ie
