The Way They Went -- How the Irish Got About In 1850
The Imperial Hotel on north-western corner of Eyre Square has been catering for visitors to Galway for over 200 years. Originally two hotels, Blacks and the Imperial were side be side, but over the passage of time and a few name-changes including The Royal and Nolans, it has become one hotel, now much larger, extending through most of the site of what would have been the citadel gate of the medieval town of Galway and almost into Eglinton Street. By the late 1850's, Blacks Imperial Hotel was the terminus for the Bianconi coaches that connected Galway to the rest of the west and Ireland, as well as later becoming the starting point of the Galway Tram company's tram-line to and from Salthill. By 1940 CIE had taken over most of the bus routes in rural Ireland and the parking lot outside the Imperial Hotel was the terminus for all the busses that served county Galway. A cup of tea and a Lydons bun in the tea-room of the hotel was the perfect meeting point for countless travellers over the next 50 years. Country-women in for the day, business people in meet accountants or solicitors, shop-keepers in to buy goods wholesale for their shops around the county, the Imperial Hotel was the place to meet. Today the Imperial Hotel is as busy as ever, no longer a bus terminal, but a bustling modern tourist hotel owned by the enterprising Flannery family. Here's a little piece on the role of transport in the 19th century. http://thewildgeese.irish/profiles/blogs/the-way-they-went-how-the-irish-got-about-in-1850
