Olly's Farm
Description
Follows the adventures of a smallholder & beekeeper in the Dublin mountains In September 2012, after a lot of searching around Dublin, myself and my partner Chris bought a house in the Dublin mountains in the valley of Glenasmole.
Our goal is to be as self sufficient as we can, both from a food point of view and energy, and combining it with modern living. It’s a constant work in progress, with trials and errors, but I’ll be using my blog to track our progress and if anyone else is trying to do something similar, I hope this helps them by learning from our mistakes.
We are now growing and producing far more produce that we can use. So we decided to sell it to people who are interested in eating great natural food reared and grown organically on our farm.
This produce includes beef, pork, eggs, yogurt, milk, honey and some fruit & veg. If you’re interested contact us

Started taking off the first of the late summer #honey this week 🍯🍯🍯 My busy #bees over in Dalkey have been very busy for the last couple of months and looks like a bumper crop, well over 250kg 🐝💤💤💤🍯 Clearing boards went on for a couple of days, these are a wooden board with one directional escapes that the bees go through downwards but can't return to the honey boxes. It's a very efficient way of getting the bees out of the honey boxes. I can then come along and just remove the bee free boxes 😀 The hives were pretty strong and with all them bees they would get pretty packed in just one box so I managed to make up 4 new hives for next year's honey production. I've got some newly mated queen's at home ready to go into these 🐝🐝🐝 I really enjoyed munching on that piece of wild honey comb the bees built on the bottom of a frame too 😋 So a big thanks to these amazing little creatures for making all this honey Oh and it's National Honey Bee Day in the US today too 🐝💤💤💤 @ Dalkey

It was an early start this morning to make it into the The Convention Centre Dublin 🚙 with mum Pauline Grehan I was invited along by ECO-UNESCO for the Youth Environmentalist Awards #YEA19 I prepared my observation beehive yesterday evening to show all the kids and I've been flat out talking all about #bees and how we can all help all our pollinators, not just the honey bee 🐝💤💤💤 I've got tons of info here from Biodiversity Ireland on how we can all do our bit I've been getting the kids to find the queen & the winner have been getting a bee bomb to bring home from Beebombs Ireland It's amazing to see all the different projects that all these kids from schools all over #Ireland have created. The biodiversity section is absolutely amazing. Very positive for our future after seeing this 👍👍👍🐝💤💤💤

Got through the #bees on the allotments in #Ballycullen today. It's getting hard to see them now with the meadow growing. They were very busy, sun was peeping out at times but it was nice & warm! They're starting to cap the honey now & some have added nearly a super in the last 6 days. Maybe another week and then it might be time to start thinking about taking it off and getting it into jars 🐝💤💤💤 It's incredible because when I checked them 2 weeks ago they had eaten a lot of it & I was getting worried there wouldn't be a spring harvest in most of the apiaries 😬😬😬 The cold spell from the middle of April didn't allow them to fly as much & they started to eat into the honey they had collected so far. As the hive increases in number from winter into spring it's a lot of extra mouths to feed and if they can't work because it's too cold they start to eat all their honey reserves 🐝🐝🐝 But now that it's warmed up again they're busy bringing in lots of nectar & pollen. There maybe another week or so left of the whitethorn so hopefully they'll top up the excess honey stores 😀 Made some new hives too by taking some frames of bees from the stronger hives & taking them home 🐝🐝🐝 #irishhoney #dublinhoney
SuperValu Ireland

First little harvest of pollen from my #bees here at home today 🐝💤💤💤 Goes into the dehydrator to remove the moisture and stop it from going moldy Then it's cleaned by hand to remove bits of #beehive debris and then straight into jars There are lots of articles online about the health benefits of pollen #IrishHoney #DublinHoney
Cara had her calf
Cara had her little calf last night, I saw she was close to calving when I was popping out for a while and I was driving by the fence an hour later and saw two little feet sticking out. By the time I got in the gate and walked over to her he popped out and she was getting up onto her feet again to give him a good lick. I left them to it and went for dinner, but by 9.30 it was dark, raining and cold and when I went up to check him he hadnt had a drink yet so carried him down to the stable while Cara walked behind on a halter. Got him suckling after a while and once his belly was full he was curled up in the corner fast asleep.
