'If young people are asked to envision what a professor might look like, instead of thinking of a white bearded man in a lab coat, they can instead envision a woman equally as impassioned and just as capable'. In the sixteenth century, the Privy Council acted as an advisory body to the Lord Deputy of Ireland (Chief Governor). Thomas Radcliffe (1526/7–1583), 3rd earl of Sussex, arrived in Ireland as the new Lord Deputy in 1556. He was tasked with superimposing English political structures onto the existing system of Irish government. The Privy Council Book for the years 1556-71 is currently on display as part of the 'Dublin Documents' exhibition. A unified biology during the 21st century and its impact on our lives and our environment

A unified biology during the 21st century and its impact on our lives and our environment Professor Nils Christian Stenseth from the Centre for Ecological and Evolutionary Synthesis at the University of Oslo will give a discourse on Thursday, 30 March 2017 at 6 pm in Academy House. Professor Stenseth's research interests span a broad spectrum of ecological and evolutionary topics, most of which are rooted in population biology. His research is primarily focussed on merging ecological and evolutionary thinking as well as better understanding the feedback-loop between ecology and evolution: ecology causes evolution through ecologically-based selective pressure, and when evolution occurs, the ecological interactions within the ecosystem may change - potentially leading to a modified ecologically-based selective pressure.
