A statistic for you rugby fans. 72% of head injuries in rugby are experienced by the tackler. A few years back I was coaching beginners. At a coaches' meeting at the start of the season we were outlining our plans for the coming weeks. My plan was based on safety and functionality- my players would be working on the tackle, ruck and set piece. Without technical skills in these areas any player can get very badly hurt. It's essential for players at all levels to do contact work in training, to do otherwise is asking for injury. I remember clearly another coach at the meeting saying "well I'll be doing positive rugby with my team", another team little more than beginners, as if teaching players to tackle and ruck was unimportant. I was seriously unimpressed to say the least. What that coach was really doing was not putting her players safety first. We weren't a tag rugby team - it's a contact sport. Head injuries are very dangerous, and even with the technical coaching I gave my team, we still had our share of injuries. To any coach out there, I would hope you put safety first by working on technique, particularly those aspects of your sport where there is contact. In rugby it was the tackle, ruck, maul, scrum and lineout. In hurling it may be the hook, block, shoulder. Gaelic football it may be the shoulder, lifting the ball (where I had a few neck injuries myself). Each sport will have its own requirements. Technique is vital to safety.

My new article focuses on the Meath v Kildare Leinster semi-final from the weekend. A lot of rubbish being talked about the reasons Meath lost, including their warmup. Here I discuss the warmup and the real reasons why, in my opinion, Meath lost. http://www.performtraynor.ie/2017/06/21/meath-v-kildare-analysis/
