U16 Elite advance to SFAI U16 Semi Finals On Sunday the Mount Merrion u16s had a home tie against Swilly Rovers of Donegal in the SFAI Cup quarter final. Even after the recent rain the pitch was in good condition and the weather, although a bit windy, it still lead to a entertaining game. Mount Merrion started nervously and conceded an early chance that crashed off the crossbar and out for a goal kick. After that the home side settled down and started to put Swilly under pressure and this lead to chances for Daragh Cullen, Daragh O’Connor and Cian Donnelly but they were unable convert. Swilly were causing problems for the Mount Merrion defenders on the break, particularly with their speedy attacking players but the defence dealt well with that threat and the sides went in level at the break. In the second half that pattern continued as Mount Merrion pushed for the opening goal and Paddy Farrelly’s free kick tested the Swilly keeper. Further chances came and went but eventually with 5 minutes to go Danu Bishop came up with the goods with a great finish from inside the box to spark jubilant celebrations for the home side. After a few uneasy moments and one fine save from Imrich Toth Mount Merrion held on to book their place in the Semi Final of the SFAI Cup. They will travel to Galway to play Mervue United. Hard luck to Swilly Rovers who were always in the game, the game was in the balance for long periods and we wish them all the best for the rest of their season. https://www.flickr.com/photos/145159853@N06/albums/72157679901701790
