Funny title for a Blanchardstown Chess Club match against the league leaders Elm Mount but please bear with the Scribe....he's losing it!! Our match started badly as the Dinosaur charged towards the late-coming Pat Fitzsimons....missing him completely...crashing into the wall. Ouch!!...not that anyone noticed, as their games were underway. After praising the Elm Mount consistency in the preview....they changed their board Order to maximise their chances of winning. Congratulations to Alex Babin, Richard, Sargis, Andrew and Tomasz on winning through with 100% scores in GP2. We were very grateful for Rudolf Tirziman for running the event, with Sean McLoughlin overviewing and coaching players as game results arrived. Margaret and Mariada acted as controllers. As a seasoned tournament observer, I can add that what was remarkable was that the event was run by hand, which involves a lot of complicated pairing and scoring tasks behind the scenes that take time. On Monday night, the O'Hanlon squad travel to Elm Mount to face the Top of the table pacesetters. We will definitely be out-rated on all the boards. They have an outstanding team from 1-6, and are so strong that they have not needed to alter their line-up at all. If consistency is a measure of Class, then they have it in Spades. The National Art Gallery recently hosted a collection of the famous Dutch Artist Vermeer earlier this year...........and tonight saw the unveiling of Blanchardstown's own in Dutch artist Randolf Bruin. Returning to play for our struggling O'Hanlon team, Randolf set up a Masterly break in the centre, taking full advantage of a slight inaccuracy by the University's top player to power his way to a very smooth win......see below. Yep...the Juniors were back and in large numbers. Nothing like a whole heap of kids, a few Adults and a lot of chess pieces with boards to play on. John, the Great Delegator decided to arrange a new set up with himself, Rudolf and Sean coaching small groups of the more advanced Juniors around small tables away from the main noisy hub. On Monday, we play our 2nd Match against the Top 3 when the University come to town. This may very well be the toughest match of the year as the University have strengthened their team with the inclusion of CM Tim Harding and Junior Internationalist Anastasia Mihailjovic. Even at this early stage, they are motoring through the league, having demolished high flying Drogheda just last week.....and that was with a weaker team than normal.
