Right2 Water
One last push to protect our Right2Water It is now almost three years since the first Right2Water National Demonstration and since then, together, we have achieved a huge amount. Three years ago an arrogant government was ploughing ahead with their plans to commodify and privatise our human right to water. They were telling anyone who refused to pay twice for their water that they would have their water turned down to a trickle. Their plans would've seen an average household being billed €500-700 per year for their bills and would instantaneously have brought water poverty to Ireland for the very first time. Then you fought back. They tried to buy you off with concessions. They reduced the charges to €260 and offered a €100 'conservation grant'. Still you didn't fall for it. Many of you blocked water meters from being installed in your communities. Many more boycotted the charges. Hundreds of thousands came out on the streets and made their voices heard. And then an election was called and two thirds of all TD's elected were returned on the basis that they promised to scrap the charges and Irish Water. A still arrogant government refused to accept the will of the people. They kicked the can down the road with an 'expert commission.' Then a special water committee was established. And now the Minister says he will refuse to implement the recommendations of the water committee which says the metering programme should stop and all charges should be abolished. That's why this Saturday, 8th April 2017, Right2Water will hold its 9th National Demonstration. Our government are refusing to listen to the collective voice of the people, so we have to once again show them that we aren't going away and we want water charges scrapped! Join us on Saturday at Connolly Station or Heuston Station where we will be assembling at 2pm and marching towards Dame Street to demand an end to the regressive water charges regime. We're almost there. Let's make sure water charges are buried for good.
