The Royal Brighton Pavilions', 'Music Room Carpet' was painstakingly researched and recreated from remnants of a previous 'Axminster' carpet which had layen there for many years, but was damaged by fire in 1975! Killybegs staff laid the new carpet on site in January 1987, but one of the worst storms ever followed, hitting the Pavilion and toppling a 5 ton minaret or large decorative stone 'bobble' through the ceiling and through the new carpet, on the 15th/16th Oct that same year...oh!!! The carpet had to be repaired and the area concerned closed until 1992, and extensive repairs completed.
Dublin Castle...and the carpets made at Killybegs!
The Killybegs' Carpets Staff would like to extend a warm welcome to our new business page, and wish our customers well for the coming year. We hope that you will pay us a visit during 2016, and experience the heritage attached to over 100 years of designing and manufacture of 'Hand Knotted' luxury carpets. We have interpretive panels highlighting Killybegs long Maritime History, and a Ship's Simulator to thrill and engage young and all, steering a ship through hazardous seas safely into Killybegs harbour! So what are you waiting for? Drop in and see us for a tea/coffee, and take a step back in time...
A typical example of a 'Donegal Carpet Label' which would've been fixed to the back of each finished carpet, highlighting the quality of the carpet by stating that it was, e.g. 'Killybegs,' 'Inver,' 'Kilcar,' 'Arranmore' or 'Rosbeg' quality. This identified the carpet as having a fixed amount of hand knots per square inch. 'Killybegs' standard was 4x4, (4 lines to the inch), and 'Kilcar' was 6x6, (6 lines to the inch)...this determined the destination and required use of the carpet. Whether it was for a formal dining room, a hotel reception/foyer, or even an elevator!!
