1st Year Football Blitz in Ballincollig Today our first year girls travelled to Ballincollig to compete in a blitz. Playing Loretto of Fermoy in their first game proved challenging for the girls who took time finding their feet. Fermoy led from the early stages of the game however the SMGS girls refused to go down without a fight. Beginning the second half, the Blarney girls began to fight for every ball and took their scoring opportunities but the lead was too great for them to close the gap. Entering the second game of the day against Boherbue, Blarney were much more settled and confident. With fantastic work being done by our midfielders Ciara O' Riordan, Andrea O'Connell and Eva Callanan releasing the ball in to our forwards, the scoreboard quickly began to reflect their efforts. Despite their opposition trying hard to get back in the game, our full back Megan O' Farrell and keeper Ava Griffin refused to let Boherbue be victorious. As SMGS geared themselves up for the semi final against St. Mary's from Macroom, they were determined to leave everything they had on the pitch. The Blarney girls were quick off the mark popping over points in the early minutes of the game. It's wasn't long before Sarah Aherne rattled the back of the net with a superb goal set up by Eva Callanan. However, it didn't take long for Macroom to respond at the other end of the pitch drawing the game. As the full time whistle loomed, our backline once again had a tough task with Leah O'Driscoll putting her body on the line on numerous occasions refusing to give up. With a controversial point awarded to Macroom followed by the final whistle, the SMGS girls were distraught to lose by the narrowest of margins, a mere point. Despite not reaching the final, the girls put in a fantastic effort and throughly enjoyed their day. Well done girls!

SMGS ACTIVE WEEK 2017 🎾🏏🥅 We had a great active week this year. Activities ranged from brain breaks in the class room, lunch time tournaments, long kick and long puck competitions, zumba, a mile run, and afternoons of multi sports for our first years. The weather was kind to us from Tuesday so most things got to run according to plan. Thanks to the tutors and teachers who took their classes out for some exercise too. Thanks also to a great group of TY2 students and our Meitheal team who helped run activities for the first years. As predicted the annual teachers v 6th yr students in basketball, turned out to be a great spectacle for all the school. It was a close game but the staff lead by a very determined and skilful Mr O'Sullivan took the victory on the day. A final score of 12-8. Not bad eh! Well done to all our participants. It's all about getting out there and getting active. More People. More Active. More Often. 😃

Scoil Mhuire gan Smál marked a very momentous occasion today with the arrival of the esteemed poet and playwright Professor Brendan Kennelly. The much beloved Kerry poet addressed Transition Year and 5th Year students with both warmth and wit. He recited a selection of his best known poetry and conveyed the inspiration for his work in a manner that captivated the students' attention from start to finish. It was a huge honour to welcome one of modern Ireland's literary greats. The poet was presented with a beautiful memento designed and handcrafted by Mr. Peter French to mark the occasion. Thanks to all who helped organise the visit and to the students who provided such a warm welcome to Professor Kennelly.
