**Eccentric Training** What is it? Eccentric training refers to a phase of an exercise where the muscle contracts and lengthens; the opposite, known as the Concentric phase occurs when the muscle shortens. As can be seen from the video the Eccentric phase in the squat occurs as I lower the weight to the floor. Here I am putting a focus on the Eccentric portion of the lift by increasing the time spent in that phase by lowering for 5 seconds. **Muscular Imbalances** In an ideal situation we would like to have complete symmetry throughout the body in terms of mobility, stability and strength. Unfortunately this is not the case with many people suffering from imbalances in the body which can be caused by a number of factors! These imbalances can be between left and right sides or anterior (front) and posterior (back) chains of the body. The key to solving these imbalances is to perform uni-latereral training...this is training which focuses on using one limb at a time. An example would be performing Bulgarian Split Squats instead of Back Squats for a person who has a strength imbalance between their left and right legs. Uni-Lateral training should be a staple in any decent training programme and should always be maintained even if imbalances get corrected.
