I provide consultations and observations to produce an implementation plan to encourage a positive environment for children with behaviours that challenge. Background:
I have graduated with a BA (honours) in Early Years and Childhood studies in University College Cork.

I am a Special needs assistant, with Cope Foundation, where I work with children (4-18 years) with moderate, severe and profound disabilities.

I have also volunteered in Kolkata with the HOPE foundation where I worked with children in a wide range of environments and challenging circumstances.

Service:
Challenging behaviour refers to “culturally abnormal behaviour of such an intensity, frequency or duration that the physical safety of the person or others is likely to be placed in serious jeopardy, or behaviour which is likely to seriously limit use of, or result in the person being denied access to, ordinary community facilities” (Emerson, 1995).

Aim:
To provide parents/ guardians with strategies for preventing and managing challenging behaviour

My Role
•   Recognise and understand the causes of challenging behaviour
•   Conduct a comprehensive behaviour assessment
•   Design a multi-component positive behaviours support plan
•   Implement, review and evaluate support plans.

Assessment
–   Structured and systematic information is gathered about the person, their cognitive and communication abilities, their health status, life experiences and personal preferences, as well as focusing on the behaviours which challenge.  This assessment is founded on the premise that all behaviour serves a purpose: therefore we closely examine the antecedents (what is going on before the behaviour occurs) as well as what happens after the behaviour occurs (the consequences) to explore why the person engages in this behaviour.

Observation
–   Based on the information gathered during the assessment phase we offer a perspective on why these behaviours are occurring, and develop an intervention strategy that aims to reduce the occurrence of the behaviour.

Intervention
A Positive Behaviour Support Plan is devised which is likely to include:
- Proactive intervention strategies which aim to help the person to develop new skills and access new opportunities, thereby eliminating the need to engage in behaviours that challenge.

Afterschool Care We provide afterschool care for all children within primary schools across Cork. This service has been developed to provide a safe and friendly afterschool environment for children, who’s families require late collection from school, or who feel their children would benefit from the extra social interaction. Our Afterschool Care aims to extend your child’s daily learning by involving them in fun activities that will positively challenge and stimulate your child, physically, emotionally and cognitively. Positive beings Staff are fully qualified, experienced and garda vetted who will adapt the daily activities to suit the children’s needs. Through our After School programme your child can unwind in a relaxed, safe and fun, familiar environment. This reduces the stresses that children often experience in transitioning frequently between new settings. Positive beings places a great emphasis on using the great outdoors, throughout the year, to help children unwind after the structure of a school day. If required homework can be completed at the club, with the support of our staff. ‘Bizzy-Breaks’ is part of our schooler’s daily routine it is a physical Activity break produced by the Irish Heart Foundation which we commence every afterschool session with. On Friday’s. we host our clubs and society day where children choose from a range of extracurricular activities such as baking, science, debating, dance, yoga and martial arts. After School service runs Monday-Friday until 6pm if you are interested in having this service implemented in your Primary School please contact for details.

Fussy eating is usually a passing stage. Your child refusing foods is rarely to do with the food itself. Knowing what's behind it allows you to support your child through a finicky phase much faster. it can take 10 or even 15 tries before a child will accept a new food, so keep presenting (but not pushing Fussy Eaters classes, commencing soon. We will focus on disclosing why your child is refusing specific foods, and work with your child to encourage them to try new foods to ensure they have a balanced diet. Remember: Children have more taste buds than you do (we lose them as we age), so the flavour of foods is amplified for little ones. Your child could also be genetically wired to be more sensitive to bitter foods, as research clearly shows some kids are
