I think that it has been the best year in a long time for Spring blossom. Calm and dry weather have made ideal conditions for blossoms to last longer be more prolific and put on a better show. A spring planting scheme is not complete unless a flowering Cherry (Prunus) or an ornamental Apple (Malus) is used as a focal point.

This concept drawing that I'm working on is for a client that has a small back garden and wants to get rid of the grass and wants a patio. I've divided the area up, added privacy, a brick patio, a reflection pool, raised planters and walk gravel. More info at jarlath@jwgardendesign.ie

Plant, or bulb of the week, this week is the Snowdrop. If you're like me you will love the site of the Snowdrop and promise yourself faithfully to plant more of them.In reality when the Snowdrop fades away into late Spring we forget about them. So here's a date for your diary, next October is the time to plant new Snowdrop bulbs. Or better again why don't you split the ones in your garden. It's easy to do, just wait until the flowers have faded, lift the clumps and gently pull it apart. Transfer the new smaller clumps to different areas of the garden. It is good practice to do this every second year, and a great way of saving money!! For more info go to www.jwgardendesign.ie — Products shown: County Council Landscape Plans.

Plant of the week this week is the Witch Hazel (Corylus avellana 'Contorta'). It is also known as Corkscrew Hazel. An obvious name for the very unusual twisted branches. It look particularly well this time of the year when the leaves are off. It will grow up to about 3 metres tall. It makes for a great specimen for any size garden. Watch out for suckers coming from the base.
