Counselling I have a special interest in CBT treatment for Anxiety Disorders

I am a qualified counsellor and  I aim to inspire confidence in my clients to make healthy choices and decisions in their lives. I employ an Integrative Psychotherapeutic approach in the way I work. A Person-Centred approach is central to my work, where I support my clients in finding their own meanings and solutions in a emphatic non-judgmental fashion. I practice Psychodynamic counselling which is invaluable in understanding how early experiences might be adversely affecting clients in the present. In addition, I incorporate a Cognitive-Behavioural Therapy (CBT) approach which is solution and action-focused and is especially useful in tackling unhelpful thinking habits. I have a special interest in counselling PARENTS as well as treating clients with ANXIETY disorders i.e. PANIC ATTACKS, SOCIAL ANXIETY, GENERALISED ANXIETY and PHOBIAS.

Good evening all - You don't need to engage with your thoughts... Viewing our thoughts from a distance takes some practice. We’re so used to taking our thoughts as something “real” that to begin with, we need to just watch them and realise that they come and go spontaneously. Left to their own nature, thoughts and emotions are self-limiting, that is – they arise and dissipate just like the clouds in the sky. It’s only due to our grasping after them and creating more thoughts about our thoughts that they persist. Begin right now, watching your thoughts as you would watch the clouds pass by in the sky. Each time that you become distracted by a thought (or two!) gently bring your attention back to the present using your breath, and then return to watching your thoughts. To watch your thoughts from a distance, imagine that as each thought rises you’re watching waves rise and fall on the ocean. Imagine yourself at the beach, just watching the waves. When you’re at the beach, you don’t tell each wave to fall back into the ocean, do you? And the ocean doesn’t have to command each wave back into itself; they just come and go, naturally, as the nature of the ocean. In the same way, try watching your thoughts and imagine sitting on the beach, carefree, without any involvement in the waves. Good evening all - Sensorimotor, or Body-Focused OCD There are so many different types of obsessions and compulsions when it comes to OCD. Perhaps one of the less talked about are sensorimotor, or body-focused, obsessions which involve a heightened awareness and focus on involuntary bodily activities and processes. Hyperawareness of swallowing, breathing, or blinking are common examples of these types of obsessions. Indeed any unhealthy focus on a specific body part, organ or process might also fall into the category of sensorimotor obsessions. These types of obsessions seem particularly cruel because they involve necessary, ongoing processes in our bodies. There truly is no escape, and this fact often plays into the obsessions of the sufferer. The fear of never being able to stop thinking or focusing on their swallowing, blinking, breathing or beating heart, can cause intense anxiety in OCD sufferers. Not surprisingly, compulsions that help distract the OCD sufferer occur. Counting, for example, might briefly help sufferers focus away from their swallowing. Avoidance behaviors such as avoiding certain foods might also be a compulsion in this case. However, performing compulsions never helps for long, and will make the OCD stronger in the long run. Understanding the viscious cycle of OCD together with Exposure and Response Prevention (ERP) therapy can help the suffer deal with sensorimotor obsessions and compulsions. Good Evening - Control your Mind instead of it controlling you. Our busy demanding lives pull us into a state of doing, rushing, and achieving with little time left for just Being. The normal human mind is rarely in the present. Our minds tend to focus instead on regret about the past and anxiety about the future. Our minds worry, ruminate, dredge up negative memories and images from the past, and predict what may go wrong in the future. Often we feel out of control and in a state of high anxiety. We can learn to disconnect from our thought, make room for painful feelings and engaging fully in the moment with an attitude of openness and curiosity. In do doing, we develop a sense of mastery and calmness rather than living mindlessly, stuck in unhelpful thinking patterns. We live meaningful and fulfilling lives without those difficult thoughts and feelings getting in the way. Anne Reynolds Counsellor & Psychotherapist 087-2885672
