Ah, lovely.......!

The Remit: Our clients were delighted with the open plan design of their living space but needed to create a conduit of natural light to brighten a north-facing bathroom. The typical solution is usually a skylight, or a dormer window…or, as is all too often the case, put up with a dark bathroom! The Solution: We thought the option of window walls, using a bright adjoining hallway, as a less intrusive way to brighten the space. These window walls would really complement the contemporary home and give what we thought was a certain Japanese look and feel. The structure is made to a very high ‘cabinet maker’s’ finish and, like all our work, has to really earn it’s keep: the windows bring daylight to the room; they have a structural function and they also act as a piece of furniture with its details and finishes and storage option formed by the structure of the frame on the bathroom side. Our clients were delighted with the result. Maximising the surface area of the glass, gives a soft diffused light in the bathroom. The slim external appearance of the frame (44mm x 14mm visible lattice) belies the 135mm x 30mm half-lapped and rebated timbers, which provides great structural stability and allows plenty of storage space on the inside with built-in shelving – perfect for bathroom bits ‘n’ bobs. Materials: 2500mm x 2000mm x 44mm Cherry framework; 6mm opal laminated safety glass and an oil/ wax finish.

The Remit: Our clients were delighted with the open plan living space of their new house but needed to create a division of space (both visual and acoustic) to break-up the large floor area for different usages at different times of the day, week and year. The size of the openings meant that an off-the-shelf-solution was not suitable and our clients were really keen on an elegant but contemporary solution that would match the modern aesthetic achieved throughout the house. The Solution: The doors are best described as moving walls – they close and open spaces, allowing the house dwellers to easily-and-quickly switch the atmosphere and functionality of the space, as required. As the doors is oversized, it needs to be designed with lot of care. Each door is made of 5 separately constructed panels, 2.5m high and 1.4m wide pocket doors at right angles. This allows the 1.2m vertical solid Oak handle to be inset into the geometrical design of the timber pattern. In terms of aesthetics, we opted for a Japanese style with a strong colour impact for the interior. When fully open, the doors fully disappear inside the wall. As the Oak handle moves behind the reveal when fully open, a flush stainless steel handle is also inset into the leading edge to allow the door close again. Details that lead to a result we (oh, and our clients!) were delighted with. Materials: Visible aluminium top running track, 120kg Oak, Limewood, MDF, and high gloss HPL.

A series of occasional tables that emphasises our clean, contemporary design aesthetic. Worked in close collaboration with a long-standing client, we have combined solid-wood joinery with a series of removable trays that minimises clutter in a living space. Another library fitted and starting to fill. We love to provide apartments and houses with this particular type of library furniture as it has a very special effect - making a modern living space comfortable and warm. Sometimes we are asked if a modern style will make the interior feel cold. Well, there are two aspects: firstly, a modernist style is minimalist and, therefore, a great emphasis needs to be placed on the quality of materials and the workmanship - a fantastic design poorly built with cheap materials will never perform and, secondly, it is very important that the design allows you to feel relaxed and allows itself to be personalised. A library is a great example. It is like an extension of ourselves with all books and items that we have gathered over years that we like, love and, even, need!

Originally this space was filled by a pine "ladder" type staircase, not very well built. The client asked us if we could create a piece of furniture there. Eventually we thought that the best solution will be to design a new modern staircase to enhance the entrance. The structure was built by a good builder and we provided the full design and all walnut components. The solid walnut shelf has integrated back-lighting.
