Glenahulla NS is, in fact, situated in the townsland of Cloughleafin. In the early 1800’s there was little state involvement in education – Hedge schools and schools attached to big houses, provided a basic education for the people. It is thought that one such school existed in the nearby townsland of Glenahulla.

In 1883, local farmer Michael O’ Doherty donated a site in Cloughleafin to the parish of Mitchelstown for the purpose of building a school. The school was established in 1884. It is thought that the existing school was moved from Glenahulla to Cloughleafin and the original name was maintained. Glenahulla NS was established in that year and on the 7th January 1885, school officially began in the new two room building. Michael O’ Doherty’s great-great-grandchildren attend the school today and his great grandson Martin O’ Doherty is presently a member of the Board of Management.

In the 1980’s and 1990’s major changes were made to the existing building. With the dedication of a very vibrant Parent’s Association, funds were raised to improve the building. Tarmac was put on the yard, indoor toilets were built and a new roof was put on. An extra room for teachers was build and a third teacher was appointed.

Mrs. Bernie Young was appointed as Principal in 1997. She was instrumental in creating our beautiful new school. The year 1999 brought tremendous changes to Glenahulla NS with the closure of the old school building. Teaching was continued on the school grounds, with classes being taken in three porta-cabins. 1999 also saw the appointment of Glenahulla’a first part-time SNA.

In 2001 Glenahulla NS was on the move again, temporarily this time, to the grounds of the recently closed Gortroe NS. In 2002 work began on the new school building. The school remained there for more than two years during the construction of the new building. In March of 2004, following the completion of the building, pupils returned to the new school.

Today, Glenahulla NS is a growing, vibrant school. We have 81 pupils altogether. We are lucky to have a dedicated staff who always strive to provide the very best education.
