‘The fools, the fools, the fools! They have left us our Fenian dead, and while Ireland holds these graves, Ireland unfree shall never be at peace.’ On This Day, Aug 1st 1915 a then unknown Padraig Pearse concluded one of the most important speeches of the Irish independence movement at the graveside of the 'Unrepentent Fenian'; Jeremiah O’Donovan Rossa. The event of Rossa’s funeral was organized by Tom Clarke, Thomas MacDonagh, James Connolly, Arthur Griffith, and Eamon De Valera among others as a way to publicize the Irish freedom movement. It was a huge success in doing this. An estimated 50,000 to 70,000 people attending the funeral, the united strength in numbers, the passion and the support for the nationalist movement was for the first time publically evident. It showed a revolution was possible and just a few months later the 1916 Rising would begin. See below an picture of the O'Donovan Rossa Funeral Committee, a who's who of Irish revolutionary history. On this day, 29th July 1905, The West Cork People was first published by Patrick O'Driscoll, brother in-law to Michael Collins at Emmet Square, Clonakilty where Michael Collins House is now situated. At this time a teenage Michael Collins lived with the Collins-O'Driscoll family while he attended the local Boys National School, preparing for the Civil Service Examination. He often helped out with running errands and collecting local sports reports and results for the paper. The broadsheet was printed weekly from 1905 to 1908.Selling for one penny, each edition was 8 pages long and covered local, national and international stories. It also advertised local and national businesses and their wares. Michael Collins often helped out with the paper running errands and collecting local sports reports and results. Come learn more about the West Cork People and other newspapers which were an instrumental form of communication in the fight for Irish independence. Beautiful day in Emmet Square today with the South of Ireland Band Championships and Olde Time Fair taking place. Luckily todays bands are a little friendlier than the late 19th or early 20th Century Cork bands who, through association with different political parties, would regularly engage in faction fighting against each other! #Clonakilty #BandChampionships #WildAtlanticWay #VisitCork Cork County Council #Cork #WestCork

Today, 29th June, marks the 102nd anniversary of 'Unrepentent Fenian' Jeremiah O’Donovan Rossa, who breathed his last on this day in 1915 at St. Vincent’s Hospital in Staten Island, New York. Rossa was born on 10 September 1831 in West Cork and was greatly affected by the Famine. This propelled O’Donovan Rossa towards a life dedicated to radical nationalist activism. As a result he played a leading role in revolutionary movements, such as the Irish Republican Brotherhood (IRB), both in Ireland and America, Rossa's funeral was the last major gathering of the IRB/Irish Volunteers prior to the 1916 Easter Rising. His funeral at Glasnevin Cemetery Museum is immortalised by Pádraig Pearse’s famous graveside speech. To learn more about Jeremiah O’Donovan Rossa and his family, visit Michael Collins House, Clonakilty today.
