Thank you all for your likes and your support of the project : a low-budget film about Sean Treacy & Dan Breen. Sorry it has been so long since the last post but we are going through a transition period and I am still deciding on our next direction. The project will not go ahead as the no-budget community film I envisioned (This is good). There just wasn't the grants I expected as a community arts project. I kind of understand this project doesn't fit into the normal kind of community projects that they can fund. The Arts council direct all film projects to the Film board. I already got turned down from them for a 'development' grant so I don't see them funding the project when they had no interest in developing it. I've applied for lots of grants but that was a year of filling forms / red-tape / waiting / rejection and bullshit. So... Basically the project won't happen as a community project. Apart from some initial sponsorship from 'some' local businesses and 'friends'., there has been little support for the project. We have a lot of stuff in place : some costumes, props, filmmaking software, contacts etc. So none of this was a waste and got us on the road on the pre-production process. I've cast some of the lead characters already but I never received emails for small parts/ extra's or behind the scenes. Why I say it is a good thing that it has failed in it's current form: no matter how eager I was to start the project : hoping people will turn up on weekends etc. When they are not getting paid would be a continuity nightmare. And I believe the importance of the project needs more professionalism. You live and learn. Everything happens for a reason. It's time to take it up a notch. We have a few options going forward. I can try shop the script around to sell to RTE, TG4 etc., I can try get an independent production team to acquire the script and make it themselves to sell... Or, the option, I'm more leaning towards ; set up a new Limited company ( no serious investors(looking for tax relief etc. Will not invest in a non-profit company. If I set up a new LTD company I could sell shares which could pay back if eventual profits are made. The Film Board also offer a low-budget €100k for low-budget B-movies ( which I would make the whole film for) but I approached the film board first about this 15 years ago when I left film-school with a friend from college who Majored in producing. We were told it was a multi-million costing project and it was to close to Neill Jordan's Michael Collins which cost 22 million at the time and Jordan was only allowed the budget from Geffen Pictures coz he had made so much money with his previous movie : Inyerview with the Vampire. I love Jordan's Michael Collins. The sets of the Four Courts etc. It's really the first time to put an Irish story with the full Hollywood Studio treatment. And it was fabulous. I love all of Neil Jordan's films. On the other side the British independent filmmaker ken Loach made the brilliant ' Wind that shakes the Barley ' for about 11 million. I was thinking on the even lower level of &500,000 for this project. That is mega low budget- 6 actors and a story that takes place in one room etc. I've made so many contacts etc. About the project I do believe that we can make it for half the industry norm. Whichever path we choose- I need to cut the script from 164 pages to 120 pages (the norm for a 2hr movie). I have been resisting cutting the script all this time because if we were making it ourselves, we could cut scenes when editing if needs be. The script was originally 300 pages long and included the Civil War etc. I've been struggling to write the story of 2 men I highly respect- include all their actions- and keep it within 120 pages. For any of the options we are perusing, nobody in the industry will not even read a script longer than 120 pages (2 hours)- we have to cut 44 pages from the script and that's what I am struggling with. When I have done this we will be perusing one of the above options. I have already spent 15 years developing the project and am committed to getting the story made whatever way possible. Thank you for your continued support and I will post future development as we progress.
