Renewable Energy Company. Responsible energy for a sustainable climate. The Organic Power vision is embodied in the MAREX (Mayo Atlantic Renewable Energy eXport) plan.

What is the initiative?
The initiative is proposed to provide infrastructure to export large volumes of clean energy from Mayo to the UK starting in 2018. It is composed of three elemnts.
1. 2000MW Wind in North Mayo
2. 6GWhr Energy Storage, located at Glinsk in North Mayo
3. Two Bipole 500kV HVDC cables.

1. Windfarm in North Mayo
Organic Power is negotiating  development rights with landowners
for 2000MW of wind turbines.

Wind farms may be connected to the energy hub at Glinsk.
When wind generation output is higher than either market demand
or the export cable capacity, excess output from wind will be diverted into energy storage at Glinsk.

This will be among the most efficient onshore wind farms in
Europe due to the wind resource available and the suitable
landscape.

2. Energy Storage
Pumped Hydroelectric Energy Storage, Located at Glinsk on the North coast of Co.Mayo

The Glinsk Energy Storage Hub will accept a power flow of up to 1500MW from windfarms for storage. The Storage Hub is now designed and ready to submit for planning to An Bord Pleanála after 3 years work.

This power will be held in storage until peak demand periods occur
during any given day and then exported to coincide with demand if

the wind is not blowing.

The PHES will be at least 75% efficient overall.

The PHES scheme can deliver power at maximum output for 4
hours per day (or much longer at reduced output), corresponding to peak demand on the day.

The flexible diversion of windpower into storage ensures maximum
utility for the wind farms and permits over 2000MW of wind to be connected to market using only 1500MW of transmission cable.

3. HVDC Transmission
The main obstacle to developing wind in Mayo is the lack of
transmission infrastructure to export the power from Mayo to UK market.

MAREX includes a dedicated transmission system to the UK
capable of transmitting a power flow of 1500MW.
HVDC the only appropriate long distance technology for this
application because it is suitable for undersea and underground
insertion, allowing overhead lines to be eliminated where appropriate to avoid potential for public conflicts.

The MAREX transmission system has been selected by the EU as a priority energy infrastructure project.
