***Wine Wednesday*** This week we are giving you a little more information and what to look for on labels in regards to wines that are organic, biodynamic and natural/minimal intervention/raw wine. Organic: Like any other agricultural product, organic wines are required to be certified organic and will carry the EU official organic logo which is a bright green leaf with stars on it. It usually has a set of numbers under it specific to the producer and country of origin. However some wines have both an EU international logo and their own national organic certification logo, which makes for a busy label. Biodynamic: Via Demeter: "Demeter is the brand for products from Biodynamic Agriculture. Only strictly controlled and contractually bound partners are permitted to use the Brand. A comprehensive verification process ensures strict compliance with the International Demeter Production and Processing Standards, as well as applicable organic regulations in the various countries; without a gap, through every step, from agricultural production to processing and final product packaging. The holistic Demeter requirements exceed government mandated regulations. Not only do they exclude the use of synthetic fertilisers and chemical plant protection agents in agricultural crop production, or artificial additives during processing, but also require very specific measures to strengthen the life processes in soil and foodstuffs." It appears on the label of the wine either as the word Demeter on an orange label or a little black and white little flower with Demeter on it. Not all natural wines are organic or biodynamic. These are wines that are handled with the utmost care and consideration for the terroir in the vineyard and winery. Using careful practises, mostly hand-picking and sorting, spontaneous natural yeast born on the fruit, vineyard and winery and left to ferment naturally without additions of nutrients or sulfur. These wines are then either bottle with minimal filtering to retain as much of the terroir in the vineyard as possible. Some of these wineries are gravity fed, use clay amphora for maturing the wines, but are all trying to make wines with minimal intervention. They are also called orange wines, raw wines, natural wines. authentic wine...
