The over-emphasis on medication over therapy is just one problem that needs fixing
A topic that is close to my heart (I did my final year thesis on the topic) is the huge struggle that people face when seeking help for their mental health issues. McDaid states in this article that people with a medical card can now access counselling for free. Unfortunately it is not only people with medical cards that suffer from mental health issues. In addition what is offered in only short term counselling which isn't always suitable or appropriate. Our mental health service is hugely ineffective, under resourced and unsuitable for the needs of this country. "We, as a nation, have an opportunity in the coming weeks to make the mental wellbeing of the country a priority for the next Government. Each of us can remind candidates that mental health matters and ask for specific commitments that will improve the system. The #ourstateofmind campaign aims to give people who care about mental health the tools to do just that" Lets all do our bit to make mental health a priority. #ourstateofmind http://www.thejournal.ie/readme/mental-health-general-election-2559547-Jan2016/
"Nobody should needlessly die of mental illness in Ireland": Family of Caoilte O Broin to hold...
Heartbreaking interview with the brother of Caoilte O'Broin. There will be a vigil for him on the 11th February at 7pm outside Government buildings in an effort to raise awareness for mental health issues. http://www.joe.ie/news/nobody-should-needlessly-die-of-mental-illness-in-ireland-family-of-caoilte-o-broin-to-hold-silent-vigil-in-dublin/527253
