CONGRATULATIONS to the St Oliver Plunkett N.S. Boys 7 a side team, who won the A Final in the Cumann na mBunscoil competition today. The defeated Killeeneen NS and Gurteen NS to win their group on Friday last. Today in Loughgeorge they defeated Oranmore (after extra time) in a tough semi final. It was Loughrea the boys from Newcastle met in the final, and in an evenly contested match, the boys showed the better skill to win it out, with excellent defensive displays, together with brilliant scoring. A garda escort accompanied the boys back to school, with the road to Newcastle lined with bonfires. A day they will never forget! Many congratulations Newcastle, and teachers Mr O'Connor and Mr Hickey, from all at Newcastle Community Council.

Two cracking matches were played by the boys of St Oliver Plunkett N.S. yesterday, at the Cumann na mBunscoil finals in Loughgeorge. They were grouped in the prelims with two strong schools, Killeeneen N.S. and Gurteen N.S. The first game the boys from Newcastle played was against Killeeneen, made up primarily of boys from Clarinbridge Hurling Club. Newcastle were convincing winners of this game, with titanic exhibitions by all players. Their 2nd game was against Gurteen N.S., made up of players from Padraig Pearses Hurling Club. Despite the driving rain, the boys from Newcastle came out as the winners of this game also. They are now through to the county semi finals. This competition should have concluded yesterday, but due to the incessant rain, it was decided to postpone matches until a future date. Congratulations boys on reaching the semi finals, and the best of luck to the team under managers Mr O'Connor and Mr Hickey.

It wasn't to be for the girls mini 7s camogie team from St Oliver Plunkett N.S Newcastle. At the Cumann na mbunscoil competition yesterday, they came up against a strong side from Coldwood N.S in the county semi final and were beaten in this game. Congrats to New Inn N.S under management of their principal and Newcastle man Diarmuid Burns, who went on to win the final yesterday. The girls from Newcastle played very well all day, and were delighted to have come out on top of their area group, and then their group yesterday, insuring each one of them brought home a medal.
