Official webpage for EdUHK's Department of Psychological Studies The Department of Psychology (formerly Psychological Studies) was established in January, 2010 to give greater breadth and depth to the study of psychology within current and emerging undergraduate and postgraduate degrees.
Currently, academics in the Department have strong expertise in educational psychology, especially in relation to educational assessment and student learning and motivation. Other areas of growing strength include cognitive psychology, child and adolescent psychology, aging, positive psychology, health psychology, and social and cultural psychology.
Closely linked with the Department is the Assessment Research Centre, a University-level research centre specializing in cutting-edge issues in psychometrics and assessment, and the Centre for Psychosocial Health, which translates psychological research into community applications.
The Department is now expanding into other areas in psychology through strategic recruitment in order to service a broad range of courses within the newly renamed Education University of Hong Kong.

UPCOMING TALKS: Hosted by the Department of Psychology, Dr Robert Savage will give two research seminars on 7 and 8 of March 2017 as part of the Visiting Scholars Exchange Program between McGill University and EdU's Faculty of Education and Human Development. Dr Savage is Associate Professor and William Dawson Scholar of the Department of Educational and Counselling Psychology at McGill University in Canada. Please see below for the two seminars to be held on 7 and 8 March 2017: Research Talk 1: Title: Using Large Scale Interventions to Test and Develop Theoretical Models of Word Reading Time & Venue: 7 March 2017 (Tue), 2pm-3:25pm, D2-LP-08, EdUHK Tai Po Campus Abstract: Dr Savage will describe some of his and colleagues' recent current and proposed work in English and French using theoretically-driven models to drive schools-based reading intervention studies. They have run a series of large scale randomized control trial and matched control studies testing effective models of reading instruction for at-risk students that suggest value for a 2-process models of phonics that includes teaching of 'set-for-variability' as well as a 'simplicity principle' for decoding and 'direct mapping' of the results of such teaching to the reading of real books. Register: https://goo.gl/forms/WAJVWPhPxZj7bmPy2 Research Talk 2: Title: Cognitive Processes in Reading in Dual Language Learners Time & Venue: 8 March 2017 (Tue), 1:15pm-2:30pm, D1-LP-08, EdUHK Tai Po Campus Abstract: Dr Savage will describe some of his and colleagues' past and current research of reading development in English and French using theoretically-driven models and using longitudinal associations to test predicted associations. The first studies explore links between distinct different grain-sizes of phonological awareness (phonemes and rimes) and reading acquisition in the two spelling systems. The second set of studies explores links between Rapid Automatic Naming (RAN) and reading acquisition. The possibilities of extending this work into non-alphabetic systems are then explored. CARNIVAL 2016: Our annual Psychology Carnival, held on the EdUHK Information Day 2016 (October 22), was both informative and great fun for all. Visitors learned about our psychology degree programmes as well as what psychological science is all about!
